Health overhaul in Senate bill imposes penalty on those refusing affordable medical coverage

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Senate-bill-fines-people-apf-3366298089.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=main&asset=&ccode=

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.

What happens if I can not afford "affordable" health"care"? If I lived in Mass the cheapest coverage my family would be forced to buy is like $1200 a month and that really doesnt cover anything at all.

Yes. Ive been seeing more negative press about the Mass plan. I believe only 25ish% of people living in Mass think the plan is working.

I'm not paying the fine.

I can't see how one could pay the fine, considering one couldn't afford the "affordable" health insurance in the first pace. :p :D

I can "afford" it, I just don't really want it or need it.

Why should I pay $120/mo for something I don't need? ($600 really, but work pays $80)
The only thing I will ever buy is maybe catastrophic coverage with like a 10,000 or 25,000 deductible.

This has to be a joke. They've already calculated how much they might steal from the fines? Their audacity is seemingly limitless.

Oh yeah, great job Mr. Romney.

f**ck forced insurance of any kind.

Anyone ever wonder what the cost of car insurance would be if it were not mandatory?

We're in for a world of hurt.

I think I'm going to have to research how to make my own insurance company.

Maybe we can start a group here and start the Liberty Forest Insurance Coorporation.

here in Massachusetts, people purchase insurance during tax time, then just stop paying once the tax season is over. No insurance, no fines.

So they purchase a service which they don't recieve? Tomorrow, I think I'm going to go buy a flat screen tv and leave it in the store.

Does this $1000 go to your own insurance? There is no affordable insurance.

They stop paying the monthly fees, and no longer recieve the services. If you put a flat screen on layaway, you could take it home, if you stopped paying the monthly charges it would be repossesed.

thats a real question Obama needs to be asked on national tv. i hardly make $1200 a month! if this were to happen, my employer would have to raise my wage double or more just so i could stay at the level i am now. then he would be out of business. this is the great snowball effect this shitty bill will have on everyone. no way in hell im paying out money like that just because they say i have to. our insurance is $40 a week as it is and sometimes thats alot to pay.

So they tax us for the 1 trillion ,the cost of the program and cut Medicaid and Medicare and force us to buy the insurance or we are fined,,,,I think they will take the money through taxing our wages on a monthly basis not at the end of the year I suspect / we are screwed
