Remember the GOP takeover of the NY legislature? Apparently the children of the left are still in tantrum mode.

So what...

I thought it was the socialist democrats of the FDR era that came up with pledging allegiance?
This isn't a 1776 thing.

I give my pledge to anything voluntarily, on my own will.

A pledge of allegiance is remarkably similar to a decree on your acceptance of obedience.

It seems kinda creepy to me.. the whole idea of pledging allegiance to a flag.

Because then we can all pretend that our country is the symbol, and the symbol must be protected, and we can start making really dumb laws to enforce the protection of the symbol...

This is how slaves are made.

The Dems are asshats, but so are the Reps. That being said, I think The Pledge is unAmerican and smacks of totalitarianism.

So what...

exactly and in protest i would sit down as well. this is a non-issue

personally i think most of the dems and most of the republicans should be tarred and feathered or as the british did ,sit them on a table and roll them up on a roller as they watch themselves being rolled! watch elizabeth the movie;) for homeland security i am just referencing a movie. i do not own a table or a rolling pin;)

I definitely agree with this. At the same time, I think it's important to keep in mind that when politicians aren't standing for the pledge, they probably have reasons other than our reason of detesting totalitarianism and state-worship. Whereas people like you and I will not allow ourselves to be coerced into pledging allegiance to anything we do not voluntarily give our loyalty to on its own merits, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys are thinking, "Of course I'm not loyal to the United States - I'm loyal to the United Nations!" I'm being facetious here, but...only a little.

Today, most Americans who support the pledge reject Bellamy’s vision and view the pledge as a reaffirmation of their loyalty to the Framers’ vision of a limited, federal republic that recognizes that rights come from the creator, not from the state. In order to help preserve the Framers’ system of a limited federal government and checks and balances, I am pleased to support HR 2028, the Pledge Protection Act. I urge my colleagues to do the same.

He's a flawed politician.

Like the We The People Act, just straight bad law.

Why would anybody want to pledge their allegiance to the state? Also, the pledge was written by a socialist, Francis Bellamy. I would never stand for the pledge.

Here is the "Bellamy salute":

I remember when I was in kindergarten I didn't want to say the pledge because it weirded me out. My teacher noticed and told me that if I didn't, "the police would come." That said, take a look at this thread from Free Republic in which I kinda got into it with some of the statists: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2282852/posts

I wasn't advocating the pledge. I was just pointing out that paul supports legislation supporting the pledge.
