View Full Version : Legislative question

Here's a question that I should know - I probably did know closer to my school days - but am not quite clear on:

In the legislative process, a bill passes in the House. Similar legislation, but with major differences, passes in the Senate. The two bills then goes to conference to reconcile the differences.

But what I never hear or read in the news media is the new, compromised bill going back to the House and Senate for a final approval vote.

Does this occur?

If not, if the conference approved compromise bill goes straight to the President, then this would potentially mean that the final bill may not be supported by some of the yes votes of the initial bills.

It's just plain dumb, but this is a little piece of knowledge which has fallen through the crack on my part.

It does have to go back to the 2 houses.
The whole House and Senate must agree to the same bill to get it passed.
