Sanford admits affair, apologizes to family
Governor apologizes to wife, sons and friends

-- BREAKING: Sanford admits he has been unfaithful to his wife.

Gov. Mark Sanford admitted today that his secret trip to Argentina over Father's Day weekend was to visit a woman he is having an affair with.

"I have developed a relationship with what started as a dear dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I expect many of these things do, just casual email back and forth," Sanford said. "But here recently this last year developed into something much more."

Asked if Sanford was separated from his wife, he said "I don't know how you want to define that. I"m here and she's there. I guess in a formal sense we are not."

Sanford said his wife has known about the affair and they have been working through it for the past five months. "What I did was wrong, period. End of story," Sanford said.

Sanford arrived in the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport this morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said then. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media.

Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday ended the mystery.

Sanford, in an interview with The State, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money.

Sanford said he had considered hiking on the Appalachian Trail, an activity he said he has enjoyed since he was a high school student.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford said "... It's a great city."

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

Sanford, who was wearing a blue and white button down shirt and brown denim pants, said he left for Buenos Aires on Thursday night from Columbia Metropolitan Airport and had originally planned to come back tomorrow.

Media reports said a SLED SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot.

Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer declined to immediately comment to The Associated Press, and the governor did not return cell phone messages.

Sanford planned a news conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday at his office in Columbia.

Critics slammed his administration for lying to the public.

"Lies. Lies. Lies. That's all we get from his staff. That's all we get from his people. That's all we get from him," said state Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia. "Why all the big cover-up?"

Trying to drive along the coast could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Reaching coastal resorts to the south requires a drive of nearly four hours on an inland highway with views of endless cattle ranches. To the north is a river delta of islands reached only by boat.

A spokesman for Argentina's immigration agency wouldn't comment Wednesday on whether Sanford entered the country, citing privacy laws.

The governor said he cut his trip short after his chief of staff, Scott English, told him his trip was gaining a lot of media attention and he needed to come back.

When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know."

Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial.

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.

"I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion," Sanford said.

Sanford said he has taken adventure trips for years to unwind. He has visited such places as the coast of Turkey, the Greek Isles and South America. He was with friends sometimes and sometimes by himself.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in," Sanford said.

Sanford said the legislative session was a difficult one for him, particularly losing the fight over whether he should accept stimulus $700 million in stimulus money he wanted lawmakers to spend on debt instead of urgent budget needs.

"It was a long session and I needed a break," Sanford said.

After a brief conversation with a reporter, Sanford was escorted away by an aide.

A couple hours ago he was still saying he was hiking in Argentina. Someone caught him, otherwise he wouldn't have said anything. Looks like he'd rather say it then have the pictures (or whatever evidence) come out.

I know it really sucks. He was one of the few good guys and now he is most probably gone and in his place will be a spend crazy liberal or a spend crazy NeoCon.

You know most likely the next guy isn't going to stand up to the money hungry bastard legislators at the state level.

Almost all of them "pull this shit".. they've got some major character flaw and that's why they're allowed into office. If they step out of line then it gets used against them. (see Spitzer, Blago, etc).

This is a message to others in office... go against the administration, the bankers, the powerful, and you will be out.

I know, as long as you are a social conservative in the south you can stay in office forever, no matter how much you destroy our country.

This fucken blows!!! Thanks a lot Sanford. What really pisses me off is the whole time this was going on he is becoming even more a public spokesman for at least fiscal liberty. Now he looks like he has no morals and can't be trusted worth a dime. Mother fucker. Another huge step back for liberty!!!

Sanford was a tool all along.

He was the Chairman of the Republican Governers Association. He supported preemptive war and he shilled for Rick Perry amongst others. Part of the machine.

Apologizing profusely to his staff, family and friends for disappearing unexpectedly, a teary-eyed South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said today that he had been "unfaithful" and admitted affair with a woman in Argentina.
Gov. Mark Sanford explains mystery trip: "I have been unfaithful to my wife."

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford said at a press conference this afternoon, adding that his affair was with a "dear, dear friend from Argentina."

The affair, Sanford said, began "casually" but "last year developed into something much more."

"We developed a remarkable friendship over those eight years and then as I said about a year ago it sparked into something more than that," Sanford explained. "I have seen her three times since then, during that whole sparking thing. ... It was discovered five months ago and went into serious overdrive."

Sanford also offered his resignation from his position as chairman of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), saying that he would need to focus on what he called a "very long process."

If we were to unite in Colorado. the gop is so low we would have more members then the colorado gop. if almost 1/3 of the gop(aka ron paul republicans) and then the lp/cp/tp and indys united. we would be the news as well as controlling the debates in Colorado!

not for Monica's intervention* "heading him off", e.g., Missile Technology Transfer to the Chinese. Maybe he would

This makes absolutely no sense at all.

Obama and Bush are nearly identical. Their cabinets are filled with people with the same ideology. Political parties are just tools. Tools right now which are controlled by the very same people. So to focus all your hate on an inanimate object isn't going to do squat. When you do that, TPTB laugh at you! Man, you've got to get past this.

I don't think the best plan is to focus solely on trying to win them over. I thought the plan was to be the ones to SHOW UP at GOP meetings, as so few do, and win positions of influence within the party at the local level.

each area is different. i am thinking more on a state level then a federal level. there is nothing to sell in the gop in colorado. they are neo-cons and the republicans just re-elected the same neo-cons.

Nope Sanford supports preemptive war with North Korea.

http://www.prisonplanet.com/gingrich-attack-north-korea-with-electromagnetic-pulse.html

"Only hours after North Korea launched a rocket, Newt Gingrich was on television saying the United States should have preemptively attacked the nuclear-armed country – with an electromagnetic pulse.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) agreed with Gingrich’s preemptive policy, saying that “in the countryside of South Carolina, at some point you’ve got to back up words with action.”

I was watching the Colbert Report and saw some clips of Sanford admitting he was having an affair.

Does anyone else get the feeling he was lying? His body language and voice tone sounded as if he wasn't being truthful. If he is lying, what is he covering up?

I would vote for Johnson. I really like him. Not perfect.....but pretty damn good. Put him on a ticket with Ron and I'll be beyond satisfied.

Sanford and Johnson are the same. If RP would pick Johnson after what Johnson did to his wife I would probably withdraw my vote for Paul.

They are far from the same and that's a bullheaded thing to say. They are totally different on policy and Johnson is sincere and articulate.

And why? Because they got a divorce? Then you must not care for more than 50% of Americans.

No because he cheated on his wife which is why they got divorced and it basically killed her.

You don't die from separation. Quit the nonsense trying to defend Sanford by criticizing Johnson.

Finally, I wasn't aware there was a law that bound you exclusively to the ownership of one individual

I'm just glad Sanford got knocked down a peg. This helps people see flaws in his policy because he's no longer untouchable. I feel bad for his family and his wife, but he's not bound to her eternally.

And for your information I am coming down just as hard on Sanford. I didn't even know about Johnson's actions against his wife until this morning. I thought he had the divorce before going out with another woman.

An there is no law that says I have to vote for Johnson because he is known to break his word.

17 years of marriage and have never touched another woman in a sexual way. I put my arm around another woman's waist once, I was riding in the elevator with my wife, and I got confused which side my wife was standing on :D. And the other woman DID look like her from behind, it could have been MUCH worse. :p

Ex-Gov. Johnson, Wife Are Divorcing
By Leslie Linthicum

Former Gov. Gary Johnson and his wife, Dee, were New Mexico's first
couple for eight years.
Now, they're calling it quits.
Johnson said this week the couple had been separated since May and
were taking legal steps toward divorce.
"I love her. I always will," Johnson said in a phone interview from
Hawaii, where he was giving a speech. "We have just grown apart for
what I consider a long time. I've been going from one adventure to
another and I've been doing it by myself."
Johnson, 52, said Tuesday that he initiated the separation and that he
has been dating Deborah Werenko of Santa Fe, a family practice
physician and divorced mother of three who is also a competitive
athlete. Werenko on Wednesday confirmed the two are dating.
Dee Johnson, 52, said Gary's actions are responsible for the split.
"My heart is broken with what Gary's done to me but I'm a survivor
and I'll make it through this."
Dee Johnson is living at the couple's Albuquerque house; Gary
Johnson is living at their Taos Ski Valley house.
The Johnsons, who met while skiing at Red River when they were
teenagers, have been married for 28 years and have two grown children.
They built a construction firm together, Big J, and were self-made
millionaires by the time Johnson decided to run for governor in 1994.
Johnson, a maverick Republican, took office in 1995 and served for
eight years. His tenure was marked by furious fights with state
lawmakers. He attracted the nickname "Governor No" for his record
number of vetoes and "Puff Daddy" for his quest to decriminalize
marijuana use.
Since leaving office in 2002, Johnson has pursued athletics, training
for triathlons, climbing Mount Everest and skiing nearly every day in
the winter from his home in Taos Ski Valley.
Dee Johnson has been involved in charity events and has pursued art,
learning welding and sculpting from renowned artist OK Harris.
Johnson and Werenko attended the gala grand opening of the
Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum together in

THIS GUY IS A TROLL!!! Not once have I seen him take shots at the democrats. It's all about the evil GOP. Go back to sleep specialtyblend.

You remind me a character in movie called "Dead Man". In it the American Indian character is called "Nobody", "he who speaks a lot but says nothing".

Sanford was a tool all along.

He was the Chairman of the Republican Governers Association. He supported preemptive war and he shilled for Rick Perry amongst others. Part of the machine.

Total game player. He would have been the perfect wedge in 2012 because he had so many of you fooled.
+1000

When I heard the news my smile was this big :D He's the only republican with the potential to cut into Ron Paul's support and divide our movement. Bye Bye!

Bingo. He was a plant. I am glad this happened to him so now people will stop talking about this "Sanford for 2012" crap.

The focus should be on Ron Paul and Gary Johnson in running for 2012 as the liberty candidate for president, not someone globalist plant like Sanford.
Here, here! Why the long faces guys? This is the next best news RP supporters have got since Obama stomped McCain and the GOP in the general election. I'm in favor of everything that throws the GOP into more turmoil. Our libertarian takeover will be that much easier now. ;)

No law says you have to vote for Johnson, but he's not known for "Breaking his word." The man has been very consistent.

Well, in a way, it almost has a sense of tragic romance to it, star-crossed lovers you know.

His career is most likely over, but at least its more interesting than getting caught with a chubby intern in the oval office.

I think pc is the troll. He can't tell a Ron Paul Republican from a neocon, apparently. He actually still thinks it's all about the prepackaged "left"/"right" officially approved false paradigm bull.

Speciallyblend is right. We do face a stigma in working through the G.O.P. His brand of trashing neocons is just what we must do when dealing with a good many people.
