took the money and ran? wouldn't be any different than other scams.

A political action commitee is required to spend the funds for a political purpose, or return the funds. And file financial records of the receipts and expenses. In N.C. these are due in mid-year (close of June) and I would assume most states are similar. You should be able to look up what they did, with a records search at the state board of elections, if you're suspicious.

According to the FEC's website, they haven't filed any quarterly reports yet. Their next report is due at the end of June and will cover all activity from 4/1/09 - 6/30/09. It will show where money was spent and/or what they have on hand.

Any reports they have filed/will file will appear here.

I've contacted the guy whom I believe is in charge of PEAC PAC. I don't think it's anything fishy guys, it's probably exactly what it says.

I'm pretty sure these people are literally the people who run Rand Paul's website and also the people who ran the Rally for The Republic site. So don't jump to conclusions.

Theyve done good and theyll keep workin Im sure.

If it wasnt for them, I am pretty sure Schiff would never be where he is now.

We envision working hard to seek honest candidates, promote campaigns in the pursuit of liberty, and build a platform for continued successes.

This portion is very suspicious, and suggests that money will go to causes not specified when the money was collected.

(not to mention that they have a big mailing list of donors, now)

If they do put money toward different causes than what was implied, I don't know if I'd call it a scam, but definitely an abuse of trust and power.

The PEAC PAC is a very recent creation, and they (listed staff, included (http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:9Cn_bv7qfe0J:www.schiff2010.com/about-peac+PEAC+PAC)) should be careful of how they handle this, if they do want to become a force in libertarian politics.

Edit: Okay, no abuse of trust. It was clearly noted that donations may go to different causes. It would have been nice if they gave a reason why the site was taken down.....

"Donations go to the Political Exploration and Awareness Committee. The committee is dedicated to promoting constitutional candidates, potential candidates, and issues that are in favor of limited and constitutional government. In the event Peter Schiff decides not to run for office, all donations will go to support other candidates or potential candidates, such as a Ron Paul run for President in 2012, and/or will be used to support other organizations such as the Campaign for Liberty and Young Americans for Liberty as legally allowed by law."

Oh wait -- was any money actually collected?

Sounds like the took a page out of the Trevor Lyman play book.

Well Peter should be announcing something soon one way or the other.

To me, it seems as if Schiff contacted them and told him he is not gonna run. If he told them he was gonna run then the message would be a bit more enthusiastic.

Pure speculation, though....

For what it's worth, this site http://www.peterschiff2010.com/ had said something like 'Site Holder in case Peter Schiff decides to run'. About two or three weeks ago it took on a different look and switched to:

Peter Schiff for US Senate is currently under maintenance. We should be back shortly. Thank you for your patience.

The current http://www.schiff2010.com/ now looks identical other than the text. Maybe it is just a common theme for a dormant site? If I had to bet money, I'd say the PEAC PAC guys are already working with Peter, getting ready to launch the campaign.

I don't understand why they've taken down EVERYTHING. It would be one thing to put up a "hey we're suspending things for a while in order to shift our focus" note, but what are we supposed to do if we want to point to a site where people can learn about Schiff, read articles, watch videos, etc. ALL of that stuff is gone. It's pretty disappointing.

I think that now that they've successfully drafted two candidates (assuming Schiff runs) so now they are going to dedicate the rest of their time to building the online infrastructure needed in order to run successful campaigns. I'm guessing they are overhauling their volunteer databases and phone banking web apps...

Still no response for the Director of Operations, though.

Yeah, it's all speculation at this point. Maybe the research firm he hired to help him explore a possible run had something to do with it. I wonder what they've been telling him...

@Michael P That is the default screen for Drupal a Content Management System. Drupal is also being used on the Rand Paul site.

Gotcha, I kinda figured it was most likely a default screen. I did notice that the "whois" for http://www.peterschiff2010.com is identical to the one for http://www.schiff2010.com/ (see post #5). So I am still sticking with the guess that the PEAC guys have been working on the official site since it switched to "under maintenance". It is fun to speculate anyway when you know that eventually we will know the truth.

I hope you're right. We've got a great set of candidates for 2010, both in Congress and (more importantly) for governorships. Adding Schiff would be fantastic.

My only concern about so many liberty candidates is an unequal distribution of our resources (particularly who we donate to, and how much). Perhaps we need something like a national strategic alliance for all of these liberty candidates to help Ron Paul supporters plan how to deal with that issue.

My best guess is that they are just updating the website. That default screen can be activated in the Drupal system while performing maintenance on a website (to prevent people from browsing around while they are testing new additions to the site). That's my guess anyway.
