Penn Jillette: “I should be in Keene, NH with the Free Staters”!

Free Keene
June 15, 2009

Penn Jillete mentions Keene again, this time with an amazing endorsement,
“I should be in Keene, New Hampshire with the Free Staters”
It comes toward the end of this “Penn Says”:

So what is he waiting for?

PG pisses me off at times, but still, I'd welcome him.

To all you people sweating in the heat, today is sunny, cool, about 70.

If New Hampshire was like Texas, I would move there. New Hampshire is just too damn cold for me.

I love the cold, but New Hampshire is just too "agrarian" for me—I require large urban cities with massive skyscrapers in order to prosper. Denver is a pretty decent alternative to me—it's the "Wall Street of the West", and lies in the state with the largest degree of economic liberty.

If NH was like Texas, I wouldn't be there.

I hate, I mean I really, really hate a bunch of Texas.

I'm trying to think of excuses that the Founders' would have accepted and nothing comes to mind. Unless ya have a medical condition, the cold excuse is baseless. As far as needing skyscrapers, Boston is only a 45 min commute from S. NH. Manchester is often called Manchattan as it has a thriving nightlife and the buildings are fairly tall as well.

lol, I've heard locals sarcastically refer to it as "Machvegas" but never "Manchattan".

I like what they're doing in Keene, although they probably couldn't have chosen a more liberal part of the state. I guess that's part of the challenge.

I can't wait to get the hell out of Jersey. I might transfer up to a school in NH to do it sooner. Does anybody know anything about St. Anselm's or UNH?

I'm only vaguely familiar with those schools. You might want to ask over http://forum.freestateproject.org - chances are there are some current UNH/St. A's students or recent alumnis involved in the project.

I'm just tired of people over reacting over hand comments. Penn mentions the free-state project and all of a sudden the skies open up, angels sing, and OMG !! It's an AMAZING endorsement!!

Sarah Palin says she thinks Ron Paul is cool and suddenly she should be his VP.

and yes I do live in a relatively hopeless state.

Edit: the video posted above is actually more of an endorsement than the one in the OP. Still not "amazing". Wouldn't you expect Penn to speak well of the FSP? What would really be "amazing" is if he trashed it. I guess my problem is really with the use of the word "amazing". Its over use these days, along with other forms of hyperbole, has led to the watering down of language. Not everything is amazing or incredible and not everyone is a hero.

The NH FS Project sounds great and I’m tempted to buy property there. I went to their site and it’s big. http://www.freestateproject.org/ It even has an active discussion forum.

I’m wondering about a headcount of FSers currently relocating to NH. Besides the current FS-member population, app how many are moving in each month/year? Does anyone know where those stats might be? IOW I might jump in the water if I knew a whole bunch of others were.

There's really no way to know the amount of movers per month other than tracking the mover counter, but many people move and aren't counted and some move and don't even sign up as a participant. Apparently, those people have privacy issues which is fine. But, it's hard for recruiters like me to give hard and precise numbers on the subject.

It's sunny, cool and about 70 here in San Diego too. And it will be the same tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that...and we don't even have to put up with that old man up in the sky with a beard!

I'd say about 100 new participants sign up per month, and about 20 move. 9300+ are signed up so far, and 720 have already officially moved. But then, a lot of people move and never sign up at all.

Here's the famous (but somewhat outdated) 101 reasons to move

If you can take trips on short notice, check out the freedom festival next weekend.

In the winter, there's the NH liberty forum. Here was last year's lineup:

Check out the NH liberty alliance, if you're into political activism. A lot o fthese guys practically live in the state house: http://www.nhliberty.org/ (http://www.nhliberty.org/) I help review bills for them from time to time.

I like the fact that NH leans libertarian-left, as I can't stand authoritarians.

Boston is like 34 miles from Salem. If someone started driving from the Salem line at 2am, they may be able to get to Boston in less than 30 minutes :) In 45 minutes you can make it from Manchester to the Boston airport (as long as it isn't rush hour). Of course, that's not the type of thing I would do. Manchester has a great airport which is much easier to get around in.

It's cool the Penn endorsed the FSP.

I'm still wondering why NH was chosen over a western state like Montana or Nevada?

The state debate and vote is archived on our website. I'd recommend checking it out. I think NH and the West both have plusses and minuses. Plusses for NH include the fact that activists can meet up easily since the state is drivable and the job market is much more diverse in NH, which allows for a larger number of movers.

Then there's this:

http://csinvestor.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/6a00d8341c66b253ef010535f138f9970c-640wi.jpg

You should check out Free State Wyoming (http://www.freestatewyoming.com/) if you're interested in a Western FSP. The founder of FSW (Ken Royce aka "Boston T. Party") wrote a book called Molon Labe that's pretty good.

We have quite a few Westerners moving FROM the West to New Hampshire. Example: YouTube - Leaving MONTANA for freedom in New Hampshire? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2E361mABw4)
