FACTBOX: Urban guerrilla attacks in Greece this year
Wed Jun 17, 2009 6:29am EDT

ATHENS (Reuters) - Two gunmen shot dead a Greek anti-terrorist policeman guarding a witness in Athens on Wednesday in the worst attack since riots in December launched a wave of urban guerrilla violence in Greece.

Here are the main attacks in Greece this year:

- Jan 5: Weeks after the police shooting of a teenager in December, gunmen linked to Greece's most militant guerrilla group Revolutionary Struggle shoot and seriously wound a 21-year-old policeman guarding the Culture Ministry in Athens. They said it was in revenge for the death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

- Feb 3: Left-wing guerrillas fire shots and throw a hand grenade at a police station in Athens. Later that month, gunmen fire at least a dozen shots outside a private TV station, without hurting anyone in either attack.

- March 13: A home-made bomb explodes about 250 meters from Athens central police headquarters, causing serious damage to a state building and shops but no injuries.

- May 12: A powerful bomb wrecks a Greek Eurobank branch in the outskirts of Athens damaging cars and blowing out windows across the street but causing no injuries.

- May 20: A time bomb goes off outside the office of a Greek investment company, damaging three floors of the central Athens building. Police evacuated the building after an anonymous call warning of the attack and no group claimed responsibility.
