Fox News Sunday will be featuring Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as an up and comer in the GOP. Of course this probably means he is "pro-war".

Any other opinions?

A video he put out:

I don't trust people with two first names. ;)

According to the wiki he was a speech writer for the 1st Director of the National Drug Control Policy(drug czar). So that's one pro-Authoritarian stance already.

He also introduced this bill (http://www.americanroadmap.org/) which according to the pdf (http://www.house.gov/budget_republicans/entitlement/roadmap_summary.pdf) on their site about their stated goals is pro-universal healtcare.

Ensures universal access to health insurance; rescues and strengthens Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security – allowing them to fulfill their missions and making them permanently solvent.

I think of that article and Ron Paul every time I see/hear two first names.

According the issues2000.org, he voted:

YES on banning gay adoptions in DC.

YES on Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage

Supports anti-flag desecration amendment

Rated -10 by NORML, indicating a "hard-on-drugs" stance

YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent

YES on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant

Rated 13% by the ACLU, indicating an anti-civil rights voting record.

Rated 0% by the HRC, indicating an anti-gay-rights stance.

Paul was against the bailouts at first but then caved and voted for it, saying (http://www.620wtmj.com/shows/charliesykes/29876379.html) "it has to pass to preserve the free market system and stave off a financial collapse."

My district in Wisconsin isn't represented by Paul Ryan - Steve Kagen is my Rep., a Democrat who voted against the bailout TWICE, and voted FOR the need for warrants on domestic wiretaps. In other words, I don't think Paul Ryan is all that great. Ryan has a good record in other issues of the economy, but with the record noted above, those other issues won't be enough for me to like him.

Sounds like the perfect Faux News establishment candidate.

He is a co-sponsor of HR 1207 though.

Re-arranging Paul Ryan's name can create "Ayn Ra...lpu"

What Brian points out is of course very negative, though I've otherwise had an extremely good impression of Paul Ryan—he's one of the few politicians I've been actively following for a while now. He's open about having "Objectivist leanings" and lists Atlas Shrugged as his favorite book. He appears to be truly loved by his constituents.

I wish people would quit calling everyone who aren't 100 % similar to Ron Paul on foreign policy "neocons"—by that definition, Barry Goldwater and Thomas Jefferson were neocons as well. I think Paul Ryan has reasonable views on foreign policy.

Up and coming in the GOP. Like many in the GOP, he supported the original TARP plan, now he opposes it.

This guy is manufactured like a widget. I never heard of this guy until the media started proclaiming this guy a "rising star" a week ago. He offers nothing new, nothing different.

Yeah, he seems like a blank slate, and a perfect fit for the next neo-conservative candidate. They will try to get someone to echo Ron Paul in as many areas as possible, with the obvious exceptions of foreign affairs and the Federal Reserve.
