Texas rep trolls for Michigan presidential support

MACKINAC ISLAND -- Texas Rep. Ron Paul may be barely showing a political pulse in state and national polling, but his message that the federal government has grown obese and unresponsive, and interferes with the daily lives of Americans, struck a chord at breakfast this morning with Michigan Republicans gathered here for at a pep-rally type conference.

Measures such as repealing the No Child Left Behind education law, getting out of the United Nations and disbanding the federal Department of Education are where the Republican Party should focus its energies, said Paul, a specialist in obstetrics/genecology who has delivered more than 4,000 babies over the years when not complaining of government over-reach.

Paul spoke this morning to hundreds of GOP activists on the second day of the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference. Candidates Mitt Romney, John McCain and Fred Thompson are scheduled to speak later in the day.

Despite low poll numbers and criticism from some Republicans for his opposition to the Iraq war, Paul has an enthusiastic following. When he arrived at the Grand Hotel on Friday evening, folks inside the historic Grand Hotel couldn't help but notice, given the loud and enthusiastic chants of "Ron Paul, Ron Paul."

"Government restricts people and protects the government," he told his supporters. "We don't have privacy anymore."

He told them his biggest asset is "my conviction that freedom will really work."

In an unscientific survey Friday morning, a conference participant who drove up from Lansing counted more "Ron Paul" for president signs along the 230-mile route than for any other of the GOP hopefuls, with the possible exception of Michigan native and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Paul was to have shared the Saturday morning breakfast with candidates Tom Tancredo and Sam Brownback, but both decided to skip the meeting of state GOP activists, donors and organizers.

Paul had a friendly exchange at the start of his presentation with state GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis. Earlier this year, Anuzis called for Paul to be excluded from future debates because of his opposition to the war in Iraq.

"He ought to appoint me his national co-chair," Anuzis told the breakfast gathering in introducing Paul. "I doubled his name recognition in 48 hours.

I don't know about national co-chair, but i'm sure the campaign offices need cleaned every now and then. I think they could find a place for him.

Don't alienate a convert.

No, he is kidding himself only that he has any significance. He has none. His stupidity had no bearing on Ron Paul's popularity.

Saul is coming around. He met with Ron Paul supporters a few weeks back to discuss them becoming delegates. He is probably with us on most everything but the war, and I haven't given up hope on that one yet either.

going from lions den to lions den to change the debate. I have never in my memory seen such a principled politician. I could care less if I agree with him on certain issues, I trust his judgement.

I agree. I'll give him credit......

for illustrating his own BLOWBACK testimony to the MSM.

Thanks Saul! And ahem, the real national chair of the RP campaign was the one who helped sound the horn to all RP supporters that you're a horse's ass. So, I think we'll keep him instead.

Blowback really is a bitch, isn't it, Saul?!?!?!?

I'm glad Saul appears to be coming around. Maybe it's because Ron Paul drew people to his event, when fifteenth tier candidates like Brownback and Tancredo blew him off.

We forgive. But we never forget.

Dude has a point, I mean, the outrage caused by his attempt to block him from the debate probably did increase his name recognition. Back then, it was probably the first time many people heard Ron Paul's name, yet it was that first seed that sprouted a bit more and more after he rocked debates and other things. And yeah, he's making a joke on himself. You guys are far to vindictive.

Skip the meeting? Why would Dr. Paul skip the meeting? That was to be his only presentation at the whole event I thought.

There isn't a classier act in politics or any public arena than Ron Paul. He would be kind and polite to the Devil if he showed up at an event.

We forgive. But we never forget.

You got that right.

Yeah RP supporters probably contributed more $ to the Michigan GOP this weekend than all the others combined! The only person we are realistically competing against in Michigan is Romney. He even has ppl at each University.

Agreed. He did help us out immeasurably--even if that wasn't his intention! :D

It'll be interesting to see what Romney's Net Assets are at the end of Q3, as well as his Burn Rate...not to mention his Adjusted Burn Rate to subtract out checks he wrote to himself.

I think Ron had a burn-rate in the low-mid 20's in Q2, I'd expect him to probably double that this quarter which I'd be fine with.

Actually I think its the other way around. I never heard of Anuzis until he tried to silence Ron.

If Saul IS coming around, then good for him. I hope he jumps on board and brings others with him.

Meh. Let him feel good about being popular on the coattails of Ron Paul. Same thing happened in SC where the chair of the county said "I feel like a hero" after a fabulous showing to a Ron Paul event, when he had dissed Ron Paul previously.

These guys are politicians. They'll jump in front of whichever populism is leading. Works for me if he suddenly realizes that "freedom is popular."
