The Ron Paul revolution

Ron Paul may have faded to the sidelines since his much-publicized presidential campaign, but his distinct brand of libertarianism will be continuing on in two high-profile Senate campaigns.

One of the candidates living up to the Paul legacy is that of his own son, Rand Paul, who has formed an exploratory committee to run for Sen. Jim Bunning’s Senate seat in Kentucky. A medical doctor, Paul shares similar views to his father on the role of government in the economy (for example, even opposing the Federal Reserve).

If Bunning retires, Paul would be facing tough competition in the Republican primary. Secretary of State Trey Grayson also formed an exploratory committee and is viewed as an early frontrunner. And former Ambassador Cathy Bailey has deep pockets and connections to be a formidable Republican candidate as well.

But make no mistake, Paul’s son will certainly play a major role in the primary and will likely get outsized attention in the process.

The other Paul acolyte to consider running for office is Republican Peter Schiff, who is best-known for being one of the first economists to predict the current economic recession. Schiff, looking to challenge embattled Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), has been in Washington to meet with NRSC Chairman John Cornyn and made a timely appearance on The Daily Show to promote his new book and economic views.

If he runs, Schiff would start out as an underdog against Republican former congressman Rob Simmons, but like Paul, has a cult following of supporters who have already created a site to draft him into the race -- and could help make him a bona fide candidate.

Faded to the sidelines? Who do you think started the tea parties? Who do you think all the GOP talking heads are parroting? Faded to the sidelines? We must be pretty damn good if we are on the sidelines and still winning the fight lol
