Some 20,000 Jews and Evangelical Christians gathered in New York to condemn gay marriage and called upon Pope Benedict XVI to join their crusade.

It is strange how two religiously separate groups will form together to fight against a cause or change policy. In political science, that is known as "advocacy coalition," where basically two different groups in society (based on a social, economic, or political ideology) form together in an effort to get the government to favor or abandon a particular policy, which in this case is gay marriage. Both groups have their beliefs and resources, yet they come together to use a strategy (by means of "guidance instruments," as it's termed) to influence decisions upon governmental authorities.

The sad thing about this movement is (1) the coalition probably will not seek a Constitutional remedy in handling gay marriage, assuming the federal government should either define it traditionally or forbid gay marriage on its own jurisdiction, (2) relying on a controversial religious figure to take charge of something which is not even in his own jurisdiction by a long shot, and (3) will only confuse the general public about what God has to say about the subject of gay marriage as well as what civil governments are required to do in settling the issue civilly.

Having said all that, at least these groups are making it known what the agenda of the homosexual community is all about, especially criticizing the "hate crime" legislation which could possibly forbid people to publicly speak out against the sin of homosexuality as well as force groups to support it in their churches, businesses, etc. (or face the threat of losing of tax-exemptions). The soapbox is yet standing, but it'll be interesting to see how this develops in the future.

Why don't these people just not get gay married and leave everyone else the fuck alone?

Well if nothing else, there is one thing a lot of people here could learn from these folks. Sometimes to gain what you want, you need to ally yourself with those who you may sometimes consider your enemy. It isn't compromise, it is merely working with them on the issues you happen to agree with.

Individualists would worry about their marriage, not about someone else's.
