New York City has put 42 computers in five of the nine shelters it operates and plans to wire the other four this year. Roughly half of another 190 shelters in the city offer computer access.

Eh, you gotta understand that this probably is only costing the gov't ~$5,000 initially and just ~$200/month for wifi.

Better job opportunities and more free stuff on the Internet. Hell, if they had access to a printer, printing up Oprah's free KFC coupons for everyone would have paid for the computers. :)

If anything, it's disappointing that private charity had not already provided these.

Edit: Well, I mean it isn't something the government should be doing, but it's insignificant and unoffensive compared to the other ways money is being spent. This is a local government, too. I'm a bit pleased that this is considered news.

They do at our private non-profit shelters here. But those are private with private donations.

Or maybe it`s subsidising homelesness. If you subsidise something you have more of it. Not having internet would be a good motivator for someone to get off their arse. But like this, the deal doesn`t sound half-bad.

Maybe I`ll go homeless for a while too, like this under the bridge "poet" guy from the article. It`ll be like going for an adventure holiday. If only I could figure out how to get a hold of clean clothes while homeless. I go homeless then apply for the dole and since I`m spending zero on rent I have all of the dole money to invest in precious metals. Freaking brilliant!

I went several months with no electricity and no internet for the sake of NOT being homeless.
