A .torrent is a file used for bittorrent. Bittorrent is a Peer 2 Peer file sharing protocol.

simply put, a torrent is a small file that you download that is used by a special downloading software (called a bittorrent client, I recommend Azureus).. the torrent file basically points you to other people who have the file you're looking for and you download it directly from other people, rather than from a central source.
