A friend of mine who works as a civilian on an AF base said he just tried to go to the meetup.com site to join up as a RP supporter but the site was blocked on base. Anybody had similar experiences with meetup.com being blocked?

Well, as a member of the military you're NEVER supposed to do anything political in uniform, and (since the internet is paid for by tax payers) you're never supposed to do anything unofficial like surf for porn. Maybe it's one or both of those rules being invoked? The easiest way (that has zero chance of getting you in trouble with the MPs) to get around this is to just go to a local library off-post.

not sure about military bases, but where I work, they do block social networking sites...meetup, myspace, etc. Just their policy. I guess if I don't like it, I can quit, so there's no freedom issue.

I used to be a sysadmin at a military base. The DoD recently blocked Myspace as a policy, so I wouldn't be surprised if Meetup was blocked.

No realy conspiracy here. They just don't want people dicking around at work. There isn't really anything wrong with that.

DoD network attempts to block social networking sites in general. Has nothing to do with politics, lots to do with people wasting their time while on the clock... And frankly, that is taxpayer dime, so tell the guy to do personal stuff at home. :p
