PARK HILLS - Republican Trey Grayson is only exploring a run for U.S. Senate, but there is a clear sign that his potential candidacy is having an impact: Opponents and adversaries are attacking him.

An anti-Grayson Web site - TurncoatTrey.com - has emerged. Potential primary opponents are beginning to lob some shots. And Democrats are starting to quietly but consistently question his credentials, ability and experience.

The attacks have only just begun. Should Grayson get into the U.S. Senate primary and potentially run in the general election next year, he can expect an onslaught of negative ads, comments, Web attacks, videos, fliers, blogs and more, particularly in what is expected to be a race of national interest that could generate up to $50 million in spending on both sides.

Though he's twice won statewide races for Secretary of State he's never been in a vicious, expensive, nasty campaign, the kind of race longtime Kentucky Republican Larry Forgy has described metaphorically "as a knife fight in a ditch."

Grayson, through a spokesman, declined to be interviewed for this story. Supporters say Grayson is up to the challenge. And while it won't be easy, particularly on his close-knit family, he'll be able to withstand the attacks, they say.

"I think Trey's iron has been tempered into steel," said Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders, a Fort Mitchell Republican. "That said, the fire is about to get a lot hotter but he should do just fine. No one survives two terms in a statewide office without growing a thick skin."

Kenton Circuit Clerk and Edgewood Republican John Middleton said politicians grow resilient from attacks. But typically, family members feel the greatest sting.

"They are going to start beating up on him, but Trey is strong enough to take it," Middleton said during last week's Republican Party of Kentucky Spring Fling. "But I've always said the toughest job in politics is not the candidate or the campaign manager, it's the family.

"But I think (Grayson's wife Nancy) is pretty strong, too," he said.

Grayson, a Boone County Republican, has formed an exploratory committee to test his support for a U.S. Senate campaign. Incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Bunning of Southgate encouraged Grayson to do so, but remains in the race. Grayson has said he will not run against Bunning, though many in the GOP are speculating that Bunning will ultimately exit the race by mid-summer.

Bunning's blessing of Grayson's exploratory committee has invited some barbs from fellow Republicans.

Senate President David Williams, a Burkesville Republican who has also considered the Senate race, has suggested Bunning and Grayson are working in cahoots and that Bunning will stay in the race as long as possible to make it tougher for potential Grayson opponents to raise money and organize a campaign.

Grayson has denied any such deal.

Dr. Rand Paul of Bowling Green, who is also exploring running in the GOP primary, has compared Grayson - a former Democrat - to Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, who recently rocked Washington by switching from Republican to Democrat.

"(Grayson's) really never had to publicly defend the fact that ... he was a Democrat for many years and now is a Republican," Paul told Northern Kentucky blogger Marcus Carey, who blogs at BluegrassBulletin.com. "But I think that's something that he will have to discuss in a Republican primary.

"I think particularly after, you know, we've had Arlen Specter, who first was a Democrat, became a Republican and now has gone back to being a Democrat," Paul said.

Fourth District GOP Chairman Kevin Sell said the vitriol directed at Grayson confirms his legitimacy as a GOP political force.

"Quotes aimed at Grayson simply indicate that he is the front runner in the event of an open seat," Sell said, adding that Bunning remains in the race. "Anyone in this race, if open, will need a great strategic and financial team-so far, Grayson is the only one ahead of the game."

TurncoatTrey.com is now a private site. It appears as though you can sign up to go in, but without knowing who or why this site really exists, why give my email and IP address to the unknowns?
