According to all anglosaxon economic freedom rankings, Nordic european nations do much better than France, Italy or Spain

According to Heritage fundation Denmark is the 8th most free economy in the world (2007) and has the highest labor freedom:

The size of government in Nordic nations is still big but they are improving, since in the 70s and 80s the government share of GDP was 60-70% and now is around 50% (and decreasing). Donīt forget the economic collapse in the 90s after decades of Social-Democracy (27% unemployment in Finland; banking nationalization in Sweden) which led to a large privatization of most services and national companies.

Nordic nations are not the "succesful" socialist experiment anymore. They are some of the the most vibrant and flexible economies in the European Union, specially Denmark and Finland. However, Sweden has still some huge problems (eg. 26% unemployment among young people, the 2nd highest) and their two biggest banks are in trouble again.
