Just finished the interview. This is the type of thing I like about Glenn Beck. Also, notice he let Jillette play the role of interviewer.

Penn Jillette is awesome. If there was ever a Hollywood face for Libertarianism, it would be him. While I may not agree with all of his stance, I think he pretty much is the best entertainment voice for us (well, he and Drew Carey).

Wow.... Fox is actually starting to have some decent topics and decent guests.... finally.

I won't be subscribing to cable again ever, but at least there are more things on that channel worth watching.

The Penn/Glenn discussion was quite disgusting.

Penn: "You don't think we caused the quagmire in Iraq?"

Not 100% of it, no. 90% of it, yes. Prior to our invasion and occupation they had infrastructure, businesses, manufacturing, pride etc. We also poured fuel on the fire and helped ignite the civil war to the degree that it is now. Also when asked if we should pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan he only mentioned a slow pull out of Iraq, no mention of Afghanistan. We are in Afghanistan solely because of Bin Laden and 9/11, yet we can't charge Bin Laden officially with involvement in 9/11 but we can invade a country? How ludicrous is that?

"Can we get the gun nuts and pot heads to talk to each other?"

This statement is atrocious. Labeling on a broad scale those who defend their RIGHT to be and serve as militia and own guns as nuts, this is slanderous and reminiscent of how they treat 9/11 truthers with their selection of wording. Make no mistake about it, this was not unintentional. Also IMO we get together just fine on these boards, I also think those to sects overlap more than people admit.

How can you guys listen to this crap and say its a step in the right direction? It's doing more damage than good under the surface. They are both tools and highly suspect as to which side they are really on.

I thought it was a step in the right direction. I think Penn would agree with you LA Truth. When he said Gun-nuts and Pot-heads, he did so in pointing out the polarization we currently have between left and right(particularly in the LP) rather than capitalizing on the same ground. He used the terms to make it something familiar and easy to see from a libertarian(IE, gun rights and legalize drugs) to show what is really a complex issue.

Penn is great at making a difficult issue sound simple and not domineering the conversation. Obviously he disagrees with Beck on several fronts, but he didn't force the conversation to his turf. He let it head that way.

Absolutely, it does not seem all that rare to me, speaking of people who are just simply against gun control and pot prohibition. Even some of the pro-gun people who tend to be neoconish don't exactly care if people smoke pot or not.

I just remembered the case posted on this forum, of a pot head shooting and killing a cop for barging in to his house without a warrant.

I do enjoy Penn Jilette..

but I agree.. one must read between the lines and appreciate the subtlety...

the small "without a thought" generalizations and statements of "fact"

remember, the best tricks and lies have truth mixed in. (see: religion)

Yea, thats how I took his statements as well. It was an easily disarming choice of words considering he was on Fox News.

That entire event was staged. Mayer is a diehard Obama bot who mocks Paul behind the scenes.

I agree with LATruth about the subtleties and watered down truth about libertarianism.

Glenn Beck on Iraq, "You break it you buy it."
Mike Huckabee on Iraq, "You break it you buy it."

The problem with libertarianism is that people say they embrace the ideals when it suits them, but when it comes to admitting their neo-con or socialist roots, they ALWAYS revert back to their "preferred" power structure methodology. Give it up Beck, its all or nothing.

Jillette - "when someone screws up my life, I often want them to go away rather than stay and try to fix it."

exactly, and i would say that most people feel this way. who wants the thief who broke in on Christmas eve and hawked the toys at the pawn shop to come back and do yard work to pay off the losses? Who wants the guy who wrecked their car by driving dangerously to do the body work on the car?

Glenn Beck on Iraq, "You break it you buy it."
Mike Huckabee on Iraq, "You break it you buy it."I didn't break anything. The government broke it. But due to sovereign immunity (and the fact that government doesn't have any assets) we the taxpayers are liable.

libertarianism is spreading like wildfire...we msut keep the flames strongAND we must not lose the meaning of the word. It's imperative that we further explain the liberty / limited government philosophy. Why? Because most of the people who call themselves "libertarians" these days truly don't have a firm grasp on what "being a libertarian" actually means.

He may just be a comedian, but when you have a LARGE impressionable audience, it's not what you say , its how you say it. Language is important. Out of the billions of combination of words one could have used to convey the same message he chose those. Words chosen give explicit detail into the true underlying structure of thought behind statements. Jokes or not.

When listening to someone, I mean really listening, I believe the rule goes like this:

55% body language
38% tone of voice
7% words

BTW, some of the most serious things ever said are said as a joke. Not just in media, in all facets of life.
