BOSTON -- A Boston police officer is under investigation for giving tickets to a slew of vehicles parked near the Statehouse on the same day the state Senate cut funding for a police education bonus program.

Police department spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll tells the Boston Herald that internal affairs is investigating whether the ticketing spree was "improper use of authority." Commissioner Ed Davis told WBZ-AM radio that Officer John P. Mullan has been suspended for two days.

Mullan handed out 15 tickets on Wednesday, the same day the Senate slashed $51 million in funding for the Quinn Bill, which boosts pay for police with advanced degrees.

The newspaper reports that Mullan earned an additional $13,000 last year based on the bill.

Some of the tickets were put on cars belonging to legislative staffers that were parked legally with legislative stickers.

Driscoll says all the tickets will be reviewed.

Calls to a telephone listing for a John P. Mullan and the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association were not immediately returned Friday morning.
