UGH! They want to tax soda, sports, and energy drinks in order to pay for socialized medicine.

We all know, once the tax is there, it will never go away. How many more creative things can they come up with to add a tax?

Even though right now they are just thinking about it, it makes me sick they would contemplate this. Will the government ever stop getting it's claws into our pockets??

If health reform is now the excuse there will be a tax on EVERYTHING. Anything made with Sugar or sugar like products. Then there will be the plastic toy tax. Any toy made of plastic which is bad for the environment will be taxed. It will never end!

Please follow this issue closely, the Senate is also considering taxing tobacco (more) taxing alcohol AND taxing the portion of the health insurance your company pays! AND taxing the Medical Spending Accounts!

This will not pay for their socialist healthcare plan so expect more taxes down the road.

They should also put a tax on the diet drinks then.

It's not like they'll keep you thin.. diet drinks trick your body into believing it's actually getting nutrients when it's really not, so it can overcompensate with eating food.
Then comes the factor of what artificial sweeteners do to the body..

Maybe they should put a new tax on fast food too.. that can contribute to obesity.
Oh wait, maybe they should put a new tax on juice too.. that can contribute to obesity.

Oh wait... etc.

I think anything with artificial sweeteners(especially aspartame) ought to have a skull and cross bones on it.

Here, I'll settle it. There shouldn't be taxes on ANY of this shit. Government needs to stop spending so much frickin' money. If we'd reduce it back to its constitutional level, we wouldn't be talking about this.

Note: I seriously cannot believe anyone in this movement is advocating a frickin' tax. I mean, c'mon.

Actually, you can also thank those who have chosen to sit on the sidelines on their asses and not lift a finger to hold our elected representatives to their oaths of office. :)

Thank you, voters! :p;)

Thank you, voters! :p;)

And of course, those who choose NOT to vote, as your silence causes the bad guys to be elected, just the same as someone who voted for them.

Apathy fails.

You can thank the people that didn't stand up for smokers, now we are paying over 2 dollars in federal taxes.

You may not think it affects you, and you may hate something. But anytime the government takes it upon itself to keep you healthy by over taxing commidities, you can bet your favorite indulgence is next in line.

Theres a poem

First they came for the Smokers
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Smoker.
Then they came for the Fatties
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Fatty.
Then they came for the Unsafe
and I did not speak out
because I was not Unsafe.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

I sure am. I do not want taxes used to control behavior.

my favorite quote from Austin's former mayor while mocking Rick Perry is "I just wish they'd put a tax on 'dumb' and get it over with."

I mean, that is where the real money is.

Umm....nope.

You guys (voters) elect the crooks and support the statist mafia system. Those of us who don't vote don't elect crooks or support the state.

If no one voted, the state would die.

Try again?

Yes. What was the point? To stop smoking? I think we have seen, people are still smoking even with taxes.

These taxes NEVER GO AWAY. What's the likelihood of repealing this tax once the government starts collecting money from it?

About the same as Bernake saying, "Dr. Paul, you are correct, we need to end the FED."

Whatever is the bad trend will get taxed. It was smoking, then alcohol, now soda, next will be donuts, because donuts make you fat.

That's why I mentioned plastic toys, because eventually plastic will be considered evil and plastic toys will be taxed.

Soda is bad for you anyway maybe the new tax will inspire people to stop drinking it...

Funny that is the same argument being used by the nanny statists in N.C. all a glee for the upcoming state tobacco hike being discussed and the newly enacted restaurant/bar smoking ban.:(

Yep.

There was also talk of metering well water in the state, for crying out loud.

Won't it be taxed twice once carbon taxes are started? Doesn't it release CO2 into the atmosfear?

All that is required for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.

It's a truism for a reason. Much as I loved TruthWarrior, his policy of "do nothing and the bad people will leave us alone" drove me aboslutely nuts. And i realize there are a lot of very sharp people out there like Lew Rockwell, et. al that think this is the way to go - I think it is nuts.

Sure, send people "price signals" to modify behavior (Obama.)
