In the mainstream press the debate over the future of the Republican party has turned into should the party follow the path of Dick Cheney or Colin Powell.

Since the party has long ago abandoned the philosophy of limited government, free markets, etc. which way do you see the bulk of the party faithful going:

The "waste valuable time trying to destroy the democratic party" Rush Limbaugh path or the "appease liberals to grow our party" Colin Powell path?

They both believe in monolithic government. Rhetorically, Cheney is more of a tyrant, so I suppose Cheney is destroying the GOP faster the Powell ever could. They are both fake conservatives anyway, and they both know it and probably laugh about it.

Both. Powell is a socialist Democrat, and Cheney is a Neocon Warmonger.

If I had to choose, though, Cheney is worse, because Powell is fairly moderate in his socialist leanings.

I respect Powell for his attempts to prevent an invasion/occupation of Iraq, at least.

They're both high-level enemies of liberty, and therefore it doesn't matter who may or may not be "worse."

What is better, shooting yourself in the head or heart?

This really. Kind of tired of having two arbitrary choices in politics...

"The lesser of two evils" in American politics needs to be consigned to the history books.

More along the kind of answer you're looking for, I'm surprised to find myself saying Powell. The replies you received thus far are obviously correct, both of them have proven themselves completely against what the Republican party (if billed as a party for individual liberty) should be.

But the reason that Powell is more harmful is because I think more people believe in what he says. In a way, he's positioning himself as the likable neoconservative. The policies of both the elder and younger Bush administrations, but still without as much of the George Bush smell that the rest of his administration suffers from.

I'm hard-pressed to find one person who actually trusts or even likes Cheney. For a guy to regularly spread such a lousy message, and earn a reputation of "If he says it, we should do the opposite", Cheney could be plenty beneficial to the Republican party if reacted to appropriately.

That's a tough question, choosing between an obnoxious lying nutcase and a subservient lying fruitcake.

Ahh yes, the Christian who consistently chooses the more evil individual who justifies torture, draft-dodging and murder, simply because of her sublime ignorance and belief that anyone who's moderate on any issue is a left-wing, commie, red pinko, baby-killing prostitute.

This woman comes closest to how I view Tones: YouTube - Gayle Quinnell calls Obama an Arab at McCain Rally (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgwOlYQwo1Y)
