You're going to need to update it every single day. And, you should format it similar to what Malksum (sp) did in his thread. Also, congress.org lists 147 cosponsors for today, but I'm not sure which list to trust.

Is this really going to pass..? Holy crap.

Ok, I'm starting to get really frustrated. I have called my congressman every day for the last 14 working days. That's almost 3 weeks. I have talked to his policy person, I have talked to the GAO to find out if his arguments held water, I have responded back to the policy person with information that squashes his argument. I have collected and dropped off signatures. I have spent time on radio call-in shows advocating for the bill. VT C4L members have also been calling and dropping off petitions. I am about to blow a fuse, I really am. Every single day there are more and more co-sponsors and my congressman is not one of them. What more could I be doing?

Theres 2 things you can do:

1. Start papering your district with flyers that your congressman is AGAINST transparancy and honesty in govt.

2. Run for office.

My congressman sounds similar to you.. His people were a little braindead when I went down in person once.. UNTIL I said "Dont you get it? I could bang on 50,000 doors and show people this stuff and GET THEM ALL TO VOTE FOR ME AS CONGRESSMAN. (unless they worked for banks)"

after that, I got his attention (the staffer) but still. I may have to run for office to do any real change in my district.

Like Tom Woods said on freedom watch yesterday, the only thing the Dems don't want to regulate are the quasi-governmental agencies like the Fed, Fannie and Freddie.

Someone with computer skills far superior to mine: how about a map/website showing the congressional districts that are being represented and those that are not? the supported ones in blue, the non-supported districts in green.

green and blue simply because those are the colors of the Seattle Sounders. purple and gold are the other colors i'd use (UW Husky colors)

in Louisiana, all districts except for 2 and 3 are on board. 5 out of 7 districts reporting victory.
Ron Paul won the caucus in this state, so it was easy to get these guys on board. In fact, most of them had their picture taken with Ron for promotional purposes.

i know a good amount about college football and lobbied our athletic dep't as well as LSUs (i exchanged emails with Skip Bertman) for a home and home because my dad went to the game in '84 and raved about the experience. but what is the "Red Stick"?

it helps, of course, that our President served the same role at LSU and our new AD worked in the athletic dep't at LSU. Hopefully we'll be back to the UW of old by then and LSU will remain where they're at and we'll see a great game.

it took for ever, but my rep finally signed up. just wrote my Sen and received this response...
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue and regret the delayed response.

As you may know, the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009 (S. 604) was introduced by Senator Bernard Sanders on March 16, 2009. This bill, if enacted, would revise the manner in which the Comptroller of the United States audits the Federal Reserve System. The bill is currently pending in the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

I am assessing closely proposals like this one and will work with my colleagues to craft legislative proposals that will ensure the stability of our financial institutions and our financial markets. We are experiencing unprecedented turmoil in our economy and I believe that we can best help our markets by fostering a transparent and open evaluation of all the financial players. I appreciate your thoughts and will keep them in mind as these issues are considered by the U.S. Senate.

Congress created the Federal Reserve System in 1913 to serve as the central bank for the United States. The Federal Reserve formulates the nation's monetary policy, supervises and regulates banks, and provides a variety of financial services to depository financial institutions and the federal government. The System comprises three major components, the Board of Governors, a network of 12 Federal Reserve Banks, and member banks.

The Federal Reserve Board is responsible for determining the United States' monetary policy in a manner that fosters a stable, sound, and competitive economy. In doing so, it must balance several goals - the need for economic output and efficiency, low inflation, and low unemployment.

Congress created the Federal Reserve as an independent agency to enable the central bank to carry out its responsibilities protected from excessive political and private pressures. At the same time, by law and practice, the Federal Reserve is accountable to Congress. The seven members of the board are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. Congress routinely monitors the Federal Reserve System through formal and informal oversight activities.

The Federal Banking Agency Audit Act (P.L. 95-320) of 1978 gives the Government Accountability Office (GAO) the authority to audit the Board of Governors, the Reserve Banks, and branches. In addition, Congress is responsible for oversight of the Fed's monetary policy operations, foreign transactions, and the FOMC operations, which is done by requiring semi-annual monetary policy reports that are delivered at public hearings. While Congress does have significant influence on the Federal Reserve, Congress has no active role in its monetary policy decisions.

Thank you again for contacting me to share your thoughts on this matter. You may also be interested in signing up for periodic updates for Washington state residents. If you are interested in subscribing to this update, please visit my website at http://cantwell.senate.gov. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance.

Maria Cantwell
United States Senator

it took for ever, but my rep finally signed up. just wrote my Sen and received this response...

i was happy to get a reply in just a few days, though obviously a bit disappointed

That's better than what I got! After 4-5 weeks of emailing my Representative, I finally got this today:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. I appreciate knowing your thoughts on this important issue.

As you may know, H.R. 1207 would direct the Comptroller General to audit the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System by the end of 2010. Additionally, the bill would repeal the authority of the Comptroller General to carry out onsite examinations of open insured banks or bank holding companies. On February 26, 2009, this bill was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services for further consideration.

I agree that Congress must demand transparency and accountability in government, especially during the current economic crisis. However, I have serious concerns that H.R. 1207 ultimately would make the Federal Reserve subject to undue influence and political pressures, thereby undermining the independent nature of the agency instead of preserving its impartial, unbiased role. Yet, I share your view that Congress must fulfill its oversight responsibilities and monitor the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. For this reason, I am pleased that Congress recently passed legislation expanding its auditing authority.

In order to address the concerns about the Federal Reserve's actions in response to the financial crisis, Congress recently passed legislation that improves oversight of the Federal Reserve. President Obama signed the bill (S. 896) into law on May 20, 2009. This law gives the Government Accountability Office (GAO) the authority to access information from the Federal Reserve about its bailout and financial stabilization efforts. This law will allow GAO, Congress' independent auditing arm, to audit Federal Reserve guarantees to AIG, Bear Stearns, Citigroup, and Bank of America. This legislation is an important step in the right direction.

Additionally, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform recently passed the Government Accountability Office Improvement Act of 2009. This bill would empower the GAO to audit, review and examine credit facilities established by the Federal Reserve, particularly the Term Asset-Backed Loan Facilities (TALF). It also would provide the Comptroller General the ability to sue an agency that improperly withholds information. As a member of the Committee, I am hopeful this bill will be another step towards improved oversight of the Federal Reserve and its credit facilities.

Again, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me. Please feel free to contact me in the future if I may be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Steve Driehaus
Member of Congress

I added the bold myself. Can you believe this garbage? When has the Federal Reserve EVER acted without bias or without conforming to political pressure? And how can this man not understand that sunshine will give the Fed the EXACT OPPOSITE behaviour??

Ok, I'm starting to get really frustrated. I have called my congressman every day for the last 14 working days. That's almost 3 weeks. I have talked to his policy person, I have talked to the GAO to find out if his arguments held water, I have responded back to the policy person with information that squashes his argument. I have collected and dropped off signatures. I have spent time on radio call-in shows advocating for the bill. VT C4L members have also been calling and dropping off petitions. I am about to blow a fuse, I really am. Every single day there are more and more co-sponsors and my congressman is not one of them. What more could I be doing?

The bill was sponsored by Congressman Ron Paul. But that's a good question. I wonder if he required a lawyer of legislative specialist or something to actually write the bill, even if it's short like HR 1207?

No debate here on that. At least we finally got rid of Willingham, but my fear is that Sark will be another Neuheisal - i wanted an alum or a Coach James disciple. Don James may be nearing 80, but i'd love to have him back. It kind of hurts to think back to my time and now see the program now as a possible "stepping stone" for a coach.

78% is 7 of 9 reps from Washington State. 4 of 6 Ds, and i think we're working on the last 2. ;)

Most Dems will not vote to override. This bill can be easily vetoed. (and will). But it will come at a political cost to Obama, who will come off looking like a bankster footsoldier instead of a man of the People, despite whatever stupid talking points he teleprompts out of his mouth.

The other approach is that he pressures Dems to dumb down HR 1207 until it's not a threat (or much of one) and then he takes credit for great "transparency."

If the bill passed with 290+ votes, can Obama still veto it? Meaning, can he veto it and then it has to go through a second vote, or if we have 290+ votes, there's no way to force a second vote?

I think the president can veto any bill, regardless of how many vote for it. If 290 step up after the veto, then it becomes law. In this case, however, probably very few Dems would defy Barry Soetoro's veto. But, who knows? It will be interesting to see just exactly how much influence Barky will have. His ratings are in a downward spiral, and I imagine that most Congress critters would rather get reelected than play party allegiance, if push came to shove.

1. Ron Paul is causing a lot of trouble for Barry. This bill and it's support could stall or stop any effort to give the Fed more power. Ron would call all 270+ cosponsors and really hound them that they can't give the Fed more power until this passes.

2. The powers want to water this bill down. More than likely they'll try to LIE and say it's part of some 2000page bill when it really isn't in it.

3. I haven't been watching, but consider the chance that the GOP takes over the HOUSE again in 2010. This would be GRAND, but I would fear, Ron would loose his influence if that happened.

Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying money, for money is men's protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize gold and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of paper. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters on an account which is not theirs: upon virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it bounces, marked: 'Account overdrawn'.

Obama will never sign the bill.
It probably won't even be voted on.

Even if it is passed, do you think the GAO is going to audit it to it's full power?

You have to think they would use force to stop an audit.

Now that it has been tacked on as an amendment to Barney Frank's banking regulations bill, Obama will surely sign it. The GAO will perform the audit when it is legally allowed to. HOWEVER, the Federal Reserve will take this all the way to the Supreme Court to see if a GAO audit is legal. So, realistically, we are about 5 or 6 years away from an audit.
