UNICEF relies on contributions from governments and private donors and UNICEF's total income for 2006 was $2,781,000,000. Governments contribute two thirds of the organization's resources; private groups and some 6 million individuals contribute the rest through the National Committees. UNICEF's programs emphasize developing community-level services to promote the health and well-being of children.

I'm no fan of the UN but I would love to find a free market replacement for the work that the people "on the ground" do in places like sub-Saharan Africa and India.

(And NO I'm not talking about the wine sipping, cheese nibbling, Bono from U2 worshipping One Worlders that have infiltrated the New York Cocktail Circuit. I mean the young medical workers who, despite a probable socialistic streak, are actually helping young children who have nothing).

I know the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation does a lot of work in Third World nations (with Billy's private stash and not taxpayer forced handouts) but I wonder how the market can increase private assistance and leave a Red Organization like the UN in the dust.

"Evidence has shown that wide scale use of Long-Lasting Insecticide treated nets (LLINs) conferred the best protection against malaria in Central/South Somalia with an overall prevalence among LLIN users being 6.9 percent compared with 17 percent in those who do not sleep under a net," said Balslev-Olesen.

"UNICEF working with various partners has distributed at least 1.5 million LLINs across Somalia in the last three years and in 2009 another 350,000 LLINs will be distributed."

With an estimated 608,831 cases and 3,491 deaths reported in 2008, malaria remains a major public health problem in Somalia that requires a concerted approach for effective control.
