As if the torture and global warming propaganda wasn't enough...

So on tonight's episode of 24 there was a scene where the FBI was searching a large square block radius for a terrorist and an agent walks up to the agent in charge and says something along the lines of

"we are having problems with some people not being happy about us searching their homes at 3am with no warrant"

to which the agent in charge responds

"we are trying to save everyone, arrest anyone who resists"

that was no further mention in the episode.

It's a pretty good show but I am getting really pissed off about all of the characters making commercials about preventing global warming.

I've never seen an episode of 24, and now I'm glad I haven't.

It's just syndicated neo-con torture porn.

Sucks to me be too. I am a woman and in the GOP, so I hate myself. And yet, I do't seem nearly as bitter and nasty as she does. If it wasn't actually cool these days, I'd even assume she was hooked on self-mutilation.

Oh I hate myself not wanting to spend other people's money.

Right? I wonder how much C02 is created in the production of their show.

They're hypocrites..

Their exhalations are causing CO2 levels to rise unexpectedly, and thus, we need to round up those who exhale in order to keep our safety levels at a healthy point.

Government violating the Constitution and "domestic" terrorism have been the main propaganda points on this season of 24. After 8 years of pro-torture propaganda, it looks like they have "moved on" to new abuses...

The people who make that show put Goebbels to shame.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. -- In the course of the first six seasons of "24," among the patterns established is this:

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) has to save the country from a disastrous fate. He doesn't have much time to do that. Confronted by an uncooperative witness who has vital information, Jack uses torture, extracts the information and saves the country.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20090223/ai_n31385269/

Because of the "real-time" storytelling approach to 24, and the series' willingness to directly address the threat of terrorism, the implementation of torture as a way to acquire information and the use and misuse of government authority, the series has generated a sizable critical reaction, both positive and negative. The series and the main character, Jack Bauer, have been accused of promoting the use of excessive violence and torture in the minds of the voting public, in part to support the policies of the Bush Administration. Slate magazine commented that the United States' torture policy has deeper roots in 24 than in the U.S. Constitution.

In Germany, 24 is under heavy criticism due to its glorification of governmental tortures and its permanent violation of human rights (e.g. privacy, dragnet, computer surveillance, etc.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series)

After interrogators began torturing Iraqi prisoners using methods they saw on Fox TV's popular "24", Army's Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan warned the producers "24" is negatively impacting the training and performance of American troops.

Finnegan, dean of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, accompanied by veteran military and FBI interrogators, met with "24's" creative team in Southern California last November to tell them "I'd like them to stop. They should do a show where torture backfires," according to an article in the Feb. 19-26 issue of The New Yorker by Jane Mayer. "24" is said to have a weekly audience of 15-million viewers and reaches millions more through DVD sales.

The general, who said "24" is popular with his students, told Mayer, "The kids see it, and say, 'If torture is wrong, what about '24'?"

Finnegan also told the producers their suggestion the U.S. perpetrates torture is hurting America's image internationally.

Why can't Olberman and Garafola be kidnapped and tortured by some terrorists? Will there ever be justice in this state?

I watch 24 and it's actually a really entertaining show if you have the ability to ignore the propaganda aspects. I think it should just have some sort of disclaimer like in Jackass that says "WARNING: This show and all of its characters are entirely fictional. The stunts are performed with fake weapons. If you are a head of state, neither you nor your dumb little cabinet should take this show seriously or use these tactics in your home country. If you are a voter that is influenced in any way by this show you are far too stupid to vote and should hence refrain from doing so."

EDIT: I just remembered, a little while ago one of the neocons on Sean "Fake Libertarian" Hannity's Forum said that 24 (a fictional show) unequivocally proves torture works IN REAL FUCKING LIFE. That may very well been one of the dumbest things I've heard in my entire life. I'm quite frankly surprised someone that dumb could figure out how to turn on his TV.

This is nothing new. Bauer is well known in the show to break laws and ignore the Constitution to stop the "bad people".

Yep, I've heard that before too. I remember it coming up in the Presidential debates last year...

I've watched 24 since season 2, and have since bought most of them on DVD. I love it, it's entertainment, nothing more. Is it propaganda? Maybe. I could give two shits honestly, because a TELEVISION SHOW doesnt effect how me or my wife and 2 kids interact with the world... THAT is the problem, not the show.

I see what most of you are saying, however, isnt this saying the same thing as people saying this or that should be illegal, banned, etc. because it effects a small portion of the population? Or the General "asking" the producers stop the torture bits because some of his moron troops take it at face value?

On a side note, I havent watched it much this year after hearing Keifer Sutherland as the voice in the new Bank of Amerikkka commercials, and I have NEVER liked Janine Gerrafhoweverthefuckyouspellthiscrazydikesname, and dislike her even more now...

Private people are different from the government, though. If I somehow I knew my neighbor was building a nuke but didn't have enough evidence to pass a warrant test, I can go in there and take it out and I don't think there are many prosecutors who would prosecute, let alone juries that would convict.
