YouTube - High School Senior Takes On South Carolina Governor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hwi-EqLHSPI)

So because she thinks it's for good cause she wants to completely disregard the fact that the money is being printed out of thin air and her governor is taking an awesome stand against it.

/facepalm

Face it, kids coming out of school these days don't have a clue. Its what' years of dumbing down and removing history from the curriculum does. I was talking to some guy the other day that had asked some high school students if they knew about the midnight ride of Paul Revere during the revolution and they never heard of it.

After watching, I not realize that they also just think they are entitled to everything and that money comes from thin air. I understand that she wants to help schools, but you can't just get money for nothing, unless you print it out of thin air, which comes with dire consequences.

Somebody should send her a half a dozen dvds and a book or two on the subject of money. ("How and Economy Grows and Why It Doesn't," by Irwin Schiff comes to mind. It's written for today's high school graduate.)

She is going to have to repay that money, why is her governor blocking the state access to it.

Steps Sanford Needs to Take.
Step 1: Get the money, accept any strings attached.
Step 2: Take the education, transportation, or whatever budgets and reduce them by the amount equal to the stimulus dollars.
Step 3: With the money pulled from the state budget, have a massive tax refund.
Step 4: If the Federal Government tries to force him to follow the Capitol's plan on how tospend the money, take it to the supreme court.

Why is it so hard to see that this is a set up. Don't you think that they would of had her on in this interview. If she had a reasonable argument she would of been on defending it? At least she ask the question, "is she being used as the poster child for this"?

She saw the movie "Corridor of Shame" and used that documentary as an excuse to sue for the South Carolina government to get more money to continue running those schools?!?

What a retard.

Does this ignoramus realize that these funds are tainted? If Sanford takes the money, he has to fulfill certain "requirements" that the Feds dictate.

Uninformed citizen who has no standing to sue, sues governor to get fake money that the federal government doesn't really have.

Yeah, that makes sense.

It does reek of a "setup" to test the legality of whether Governors can reject federal money by attaching a young, school age girl to the label and yelling (once again) "Its for the Children!!" It's telling when there's an attorney ready to field the questions from the media instead of the plaintiff of the lawsuit.

Has anyone bothered to question why Gov. Sanford is accepting the stimulus money from the federal government in the first place? By doing so, is he not submitting his state to the beneficiary hand of Washington, D.C., no different than other businesses and banks who also sought money from them?

I think the problems relating to 'strings attached' are the issue in Sanford's mind. A lot of those businesses and banks who got money from the Federal Government* are finding that out the hard way. Some don't like 'the catch,' and can't even give the money back.

In principle, his state should not accept any federal funds. Though there may not be any explicit strings attached to the money, I think, implicitly, there are strings attached. Once the federal government does a state a favor, it will expect that state to approve and support it in other measures. In political science, this relationship is called "creative federalism." From 1960 to 1972, creative federalism provided the basis for implementing national goals defined by Congress and carried out by the states. For example, the so-called War on Poverty was a federal program initiated in D.C. and carried out by the states. The federal government will expect the money to be used for its own purposes, and it will expect the states to comply.

Hahahaha wow! I hope this girl realizes that there is no amount of money in the world that could help her. I feel bad for her though, she thinks she is making a stand but all she really is doing is just showing she is another one of the millions of sheeple who dont have a clue.

Well , you have to assume she believes her tax dollars will eventually be footing the bill for this spending. Thus, she believes she is entitled to the federal monies despite her governor getting in the way.

I don't see why everyone is so bent out of shape over this thing. I think we can safely say that anyone not taking this money is showboating. Taking the money and rebating it back to the people is the best solution.

I know all sorts of strings are attached- but that would make it even more fun to watch.

Showboating? I think that Sanford is a patriot for not accepting the money. He did the right thing by not accepting it. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Id like to Sue Obama though for selling us out.

Yeah, that's why I say to an extent. LOL

If it is already taken, then you'd better believe, the RIGHT thing to do would be to rebate it back to the taxpayers.

UPDATE:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090604/ap_on_re_us/us_sc_stimulus

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina's Supreme Court ordered Gov. Mark Sanford on Thursday to request $700 million in federal stimulus money aimed primarily at struggling schools, ending months of wrangling with legislators who accused him of playing politics with people's lives.

The nation's most vocal anti-bailout governor had refused to take the money designated for the state over the next two years, facing down protesters and legislators who passed a budget requiring him to. While other Republican governors had taken issue with requesting money from the $787 billion federal stimulus package, Sanford was the first to defend in court his desire to reject the money.

I saw this today. It was really depressing.

Based on this decision Sanford would still lose I think. It is really a battle of legislature vs. executive power. It is our great irony in America that the state constitutions mustly have legislative supremacy but the national constitution has been interpreted to give executives the most power.

Bad news. :( This goes to show you just how unprincipled the republican party is. Sanford wanted to put this 700million towards state debt, instead of pouring the money into unsustainable state school programs. (Sanford is a huge private school advocate)

Three other recent Sanford highlights besides the 'stimulus' story are the signing of a bill that allows CWP owners to carry on school property, a veto of Payday Loan restrictions, and a veto on regulating the prescription of performance enhancing substances for horses. (I love the last one bc. it presents the downright insanity of gov't wanting to control everything.) :)

The Gov should have done something dramatic. Should have issued some kind of executive order or got himself arrested or physically wrestled with the state treasurer or resigned his office. He would have scored brownie points for 2012 and made a real impressive statement.
