hello and good evening everyone..

it has been a busy couple weeks for myself in the garden.. I have spent more than a hundred man hours so far and i am about done with fruits and will be moving on to Vegetables and Herbs rather soon..

it has been a blast...

I will start with the strawberries.

they have been remarkable in terms of growth and I am anticipating a huge harvest next spring... I will have 1 or 2 plants yield this year but not much..

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c262/kotin205/ar035.jpg

the dominant variety of strawberry is the whopper which is a peach sized berry..

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c262/kotin205/ar036.jpg

onto the brambles..

my blackberries and raspberries have been growing like crazy.. as you will remember in the previous posts only maybe 1 plant had any signs of life..

but in the last week and a half they have come back from dormancy with incredible vigor..

Nice! Im in the planning stages of a backyard garden plot myself. Im not going overboard with trees and the like but it should be fun. What soil are you guys using? Any amendments? Lets get a good gardening thread going.

Kotin - I'm so jealous of your cherry trees. I've planted a bunch of them and they always die.

okay heres what i have

One... plant tomato seedlings sideways, first strip off all the leaves except the top two sets, then lay the plants in a trench a few inches deep, covering all but the leafy tip with soild... the shoot will quickly straighten itself out, while the buried stem develops lots of little roots to help boost the harvest.

Tomato Booster Tonic:

2tbsp of Epsom Salts
1tbsp of baby shampoo
1 gal. of water

Mix in a watering can, generously soak the soil around your tomato plants in early summer just as they show a bunch of yellow flowers, this helps stimulate the fruit set.

Container garden Booster Mix

4 eggshells (dried and crushed to powder) per bushel of soil

1/2 cup epsom salts

1/4 cup of coffee grounds

1 tbsp. of instant tea granules

Combine in a bucket then work the mix throughly into your planting mix.

also, Potted peppers and tomatoes will develop faster if you provide them with magnesium in a form they can use quickly... mix 2 tbsp of epsom salts in 1 gallon of water and apply 1 pint of this mix to each plant just as the blooms appear.

Homeade Herbal Vinegar recipe:

put a few sprigs of thyme, chives, or tarragon into a sterilized jar or bottle and cover with boiling vinegar, leave the jar unsealed at room temp.. until the vinegar has cooled, then seal the jar and set it somewhere out of direct sunlight... the vinegar will be ready to use in about 2 weeks :)

Tomatos are in the last raised bed on the right.

Straberrys are in the big pot, corn in the smaller raised bed. Since its corn I only put a little bit of top soil and burry them in about 6 inches. In the summer with strong wind it will pull them right out of the ground if there roots arn't deep enough.

Excellent gardens, everyone!

You are all getting me inspried for when our weather allows it. I might cheat a little and start early. Mostly pots this year, as the back yard is getting too shaded over for veggies to grow well.

I was thinking of posting pics of my garden too! There you go again Kotin! ;) When I do, I'll put them here. I've got corn, zucchini, summer squash, honeydew, watermelon, grape and romano tomatoes, green bell peps, and cucumbers so far. I plan on getting blackberries soon.

Kotin, just curious will you plant them out in the ground, or leave them in pots? They look like they are doing just fine in pots.
Very nice gardens all around.

Wow, that looks nuts.. I have two boxes of dry organic ferts, Dr. Earth and another similar brand, otherwise I'd have to give that stuff a try.

Does it say you can use it in hydroponics setups?

Sweet gardens everyone! I have a question, why are none of you using drywall "mud" buckets? Go to any construction site and ask them if they have any empties and they will give them to you for free, otherwise they are going in the dumpster.

I forget what town you live in? I have family in Glennwood Springs.

I use a sand top soil mix for cantalope, watermellon. Doing allot of reading last year it said to do so. We ended up geting four nice cantalopes and two watermellons.

In my area of North Kansas City we have allot of earthworms and the soil is very good for growing. If I remember correctly last year we produced about 60 tomatos, 26 zuccini's, 10 summer squash, about 40 red hot peppers, 5 green bell peppers, 4 yellow bell peppers, since our corn stocks snapped in half when a storm rolled through we only produced about 4 ears of corn. I hope we have the same yeild this year as last since were starting earlier.
