It's my understanding that most countries of the world (including USA) forbid ship crews and boatsmen from leaving or entering their ports with firearms.

It's not that easy for pirate boats to board these vessels. They have to shoot a while and fend off water hoses before they can take over. It took several hours to board this recent ship (Alabama Maersk)..

A few handguns would have prevented the takeover......

If this maritime gun ban is true...then its no wonder that these pirates have gotten so ballsy!

Anyone have more info about this?

Why cant navy snipers just pick off the 4 pirates from a few hundred miles away? They are sitting ducks in that boat.

I would have 2 snipers aiming at each thug and fire simultaneously.

Currently, they don't have shots that wouldn't kill off the hostages. I agree with your point about gun control causing piracy.

I'm not sure what the rules are about firearms on ships, but I agree, if the crew were armed, they would not have been taken hostage in the first place.
