Looking for an accurate source with data on the % that elected Obama.
I heard it was less than 35% of the total US population.

I'm not sure what percentage you're looking for, the whole population, of voting and and of not, or percentage of people who voted. If the latter, he won 52.9%, while McCain won 45.7%:

They don't count all the votes on election night, especially if you live on the East Coast. I know my state doesn't get done counting votes until the end of November.

And of the 35% of Americans that voted for him, about half just voted for him because they thought he would be the lesser of two evils. That makes about just 17.5% of Americans that actually supported him.
