Babelfish does a really good job but has to render the word as the most common translation if there is no context (and only deals with context in a limited way -- you will get some funny translations sometimes if you don't write your text with that in mind. Try translating something with alot of metaphors and idiomatic expressions and then translating it back into English if you want a laugh).

Anyway, abstimmen has about 27 shades of meaning. The definitive online German dictionary is http://dict.leo.org/. I have found no other in any language I know that is half as good.
