To re-enter from outer space is going to be a huge problem for the DIYer unless they have some UFO technology hidden under their coffee mug. Need magic engines 'cause a parachute is useless when entering Earth's orbit.

The extreme high speeds involved and extremely thin air (the high speed space craft colliding with sparse "at rest" air molecules ) act like a super-corrosive acid and that process will "melt" it all away to nothing before you can say, "Can't slow down, needz me some sort of anti-gravity de-wise for ah my ah flying ah saucer".
