Writes the New York Times (ttp://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/business/03aig.html%22): "Maurice R. Greenberg, the former chairman of the American International Group, said Thursday that the government’s $170 billion bailout had failed and that taxpayers would have been better off letting the company go bankrupt."

With one giant leap the bank bailout bill sent us careening toward socialism. For the first time in our history, government became the primary stockholder in AIG and other large banks. Many prominent KY Republicans went along with this bailout. One prominent Republican did not: US Senator Jim Bunning.

Senator Bunning's proudest moment in Congress was his opposition to this collosal bailout. As the KY Republican party charts its future, we should gravitate toward men and women of principle. A political party is an empty vessel if we don't believe in something.

Because of the doubling of the deficit under Republican leadership 2001-2008, we have lost our believability as fiscal conservatives. When we begin to choose our next generation of leaders, we need to look for leaders who will shape the party in the direction of limited government, constitutional principles, and above all else fiscal responsibility.
