View Full Version : Winning CPAC 2010

I just searched the forums for CPAC 2010 and found nothing relevant. CPAC has already posted the dates for the 2010 conference:

CPAC 2010
Save the Date: The next CPAC will be held February 18-20, 2010 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington D.C.
http://www.cpac.org/

If we determined to do so, I think we could win the 2010 straw poll for Ron Paul. Imagine the headlines if we did! For those of us who think Ron Paul is still our best hope for 2012, what better way to persuade him to run again?

I believe there were about 1,700 votes cast in 2009. If there are 2,000 CPAC voters in 2010, I think 500 of us could assure Ron Paul victory. (Mitt Romney won this year with 20%.)

I live in Australia, but would consider flying to DC to vote for Ron (and help out C4L in other ways while I'm there) if I thought it would inspire others to do the same and could help us win this. Thus, the poll...

I would go if I felt like we would be respected and listened to. If it's anything like my state GOP convention where we were treated like a bunch of terrorist spammers then I'd stay home.

If CPAC is going to do something stupid like hand Rush Limbaugh an award for supporting the constitution (after all the support he gave to the Patriot Act and FISA) then I would either need a barf bag or I'd stay home.

Given that there were a couple thousand in St. Louis this weekend, we should have no trouble overwhelming CPAC.

I am actually convinced Ron Paul isn't the best candidate to run in 2012 even though I would support his run. But I am still down with making him win this. i can't attend 2010 I know already, but I am aiming for 2011.

If Ron Paul announces he is running for president I will definitely go.

The idea is to persuade him to run by going. And if he isn't persuaded to run, then we at least get a big wave of publicity for Campaign for Liberty by winning the straw poll.

Good idea. I'll go. Perhaps we can reserve a campground for the weekend like we did for the revolution march. I'm sure a lot more people would go if they didn't have to pay for a hotel room.

Do you have a link or other details on the campground that was used?

How many attended the march?

~12,000

The campgrounds are in the archives and our member "Gin" was instrumental in securing them. I'll send her a msg on FaceBook and see if I can get a quick answer

Feb may be a bit chilly for camping...

In case anyone wonders, straw poll voting is open from Thursday morning through Friday evening, so a Saturday-Only Pass would be of no use to us. We'd need the $150 3-Day Conference Passes or, if eligible, the $50 Student Passes.

If Ron Paul speaks on Friday again, we could get by with only one night in the cold (for those who opt to camp out), Friday night.

Hi guys...

Just saw you are thinking about camping for CPAC... it might be awfully cold... most of the campgrounds don't open til March..... but I will see what I can work out...

Another alternative is to get blocks of hotel rooms close by at reduced rates. I am currently securing some for the March/Rally in September (11-13) I can see if I can get contracts set up for next Feb as well. They gave me awesome prices for May, Feb. should be even better.

I'll check it out and get back to you guys on it as soon as I can.

I'll look up the name of the campground tomorrow.

The number of people that attended the march has been estimated at anywhere from 3000 to 15,000 people. ( I think about 5,000 people were there)

I would say about 150 stayed at the campground I was at. There were multiple campgrounds reserved for the march though.

It would be pretty damn cold, as Gin pointed out. I would still do it, but I don't know how many others would. I guess we just have to wait until it gets closer to the next CPAC to find out how much interest there would be in camping.

The "Battle of NPR" has gotten me thinking: Maybe this public forum isn't such a good place to discuss these plans. He who won the last three CPAC straw polls, he who has been known to bus supporters to caucuses, and he who was been caught cheating at other straw polls, will probably do all he can to avoid losing his winning streak to the likes of Ron Paul. Am I being too paranoid?

What all does this involve other than getting there and finding a place to stay?

Do you just vote sometime during one day this is going on? It costs like $150 dollars right?

If it does cost that much there's no way I would be able to get there and pay for it being a broke college student...:(.

It's only $25 for students to register and vote. But for the rest of us, it is $175 (or $150 if you register before November 6).

Yes, I think this is very important (those with high post counts have gotten private messages from me urging them to register for CPAC 2010). We need to be constantly shaking things up, and a voter bomb at a major straw poll should be an easy way to do it.

But according to Allison Gibbs at C4L, recruiting volunteers for CPAC 2010 has been put on the back-burner due to more urgent projects, like HR 1207, taking up staff's time. So we're probably mostly on our own on this one for a while. I don't think the C4L volunteers necessarily register to vote anyway, so we can't assume anything no matter how many volunteers C4L has recruited.

Speaking of a voter "bomb", I wonder if there's a way Trevor Lyman could help out with this.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure I could stomach giving $150 to the RNC. I doubt they would let me give the money to Schiff, Rand, or the Campaign for Liberty ... it'd probably go to fund some neocon somewhere.

Yes. CFL is working to get volunteer coordinators in all of the states, and we already have a decent amount of committed volunteers. If you want to start helping to coordinate volunteers in your state, please email me and I will forward your information to right people.

The RNC does not operate CPAC; it's run by the American Conservative Union. http://www.conservative.org/ & http://www.cpac.org/

To answer an earlier question of yours, you can simply drive in to DC, park, vote, and turn around and leave (provided you get there on Thursday or Friday during the day). That's what a few of my family members that I've sponsored are doing (I can't get there from Australia, unfortunately).

Are you a Libertarian? Robert Taft in todays age would be considered a Libertarian. In fact, the founders of the LP were Conservatives who got fed up with the direction of the party (Neo-cons). There are still Old Righters out there. I would make our voices heard. We need to really show these people that we're not going to let them run our candidates out of town, by them being the "bully". We should be the bully.

If ultimately trying to gain headway and changing the GOP doesn't work, I vote for fusing the Const. P. and the LP and calling it the Sons of Liberty.

I think I'm going to try to go to CPAC as a volunteer. If you are in college, they will pay for your hotel and all your meals, so you just need to pay for your flight there. Here is the link:

I emailed the guy about a week ago, and he said he sent me an application, but I think he forgot to attach it

We need to take this thing by storm.

I guess the main thing is simply to get as many people as possible who can vote in the straw poll, however they get there. I hope I can make it, though it's doubtful; we'll see.

If only you'd stayed for the announcement speech. The news was greeted with shock from the crowd. Two men kissing on stage would have gone over better. Then, when Mitt Romney's second place finish was announced, they erupted in cheers. We needed boots on the ground at that media-friendly moment.

CPAC 2011 goal: Ron Paul > 50%, no booing.

This time maybe it wasn't up to RP supporters.

According to Politico (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/33225_Page2.html), the organizers wanted to discredit their own poll, and chased reporters to make sure they heard the boos when the results were announced. Apparently, they filled the room with Beck supporters and didn't give permits to Paul's, who cheered and celebrated outside the room of the announcement.
