I have no problem with Americans learning another language. The issue I have is if it's necessary to be able to communicate in your own country.

Yes, of course everyone can study other languages if they want.
The word SHOULD is the issue here...

Everyone should learn a foreign language, I agree with that. Should the government force them? Hell no!!!

I've been studying Japanese for years now because I want to. I also am studying Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Finnish, Hungarian, and I know a little Western Arabic. No Spanish. I have no desire to learn it. I just can't stare at Spanish textbooks for long.

Spanish is wildly popular in the United States and is a big bonus to your resume.
Of course you ought to learn Spanish.
I think you guys are taking this, "STOP FORCING ME TO DO THIS!!!!" too far. It's just a mere suggestion, and a good one at that.

Very good idea. There are going to be more and more Mexicans in this country and knowing Spanish is great for your resume. I've been studying Spanish for a while and plan on teaching it to my children.

In Europe you are considered ignorant if you don't know four languages. I don't agree with that, that is taking it to the extreme. But, if you want to expand your intellectual capacity and understanding of other people, you ought to learn the language they speak. It reveals a lot about their culture.
That being said, we should only have to know English in the United States. Our people have spoken English for generations, and we shouldn't have to change because there is an uncontrolled flood across the border to take jobs that aren't worth minimum wage.

There is more than 1 official language in many countries. At this point, to think that spanish will not eventually be an official language in the U.S. alongside english is probably akin to sticking one's head in the sand.

This is a social issue, not a government one. Languages are born and they die. Some rise in popularity some fall. Let the people speak what they want. Do what you want. :)

Yeah, in those countries there are multiple peoples who have spoken those languages. They didn't show up one day and demand everything come in their language.

On what day did "they" both arrive and demand that?

You're right, it is a hyperbolic idiom. Congratulations, you have mastered a portion of the English language.
