When we're all being told to drink kool-aid, how can we refuse and still prosper?

In the most recent past, the areas of the nation with frugal state governments have been the ones that prospered the most. Now, Obama has threatened every state that they must drink from the spigot of socialism or else suffer economically.
How can a state refuse such Federal hand outs and still prosper?

A state seceding would have them doing so from a conclusion which is a natural law. A self evident natural law supercedes all past traditions and future occurences.
Our Founding-Fathers signed their names as responsible leaders willing to stand under God's judgement. We can either stand with them in faith or start all over.
