Sounds like a good one, but I have not read it. I will keep my eyes open for books by Rothbard at the used bookstores, which I frequent quite often.

I've read all of the ones I voted for and I've started Atlas Shrugged but it's been moved back because I've got a research paper due on the origins and originators of the Austrian School in the 19th Century. I'm wanting to begin with Turgot but I think he wrote his economic essays in 1766 so that may be stretch, but I'm going to end with Mises's Theory of Money and Credit in 1912. It will include J.B. Say, Bastiat, Menger, Bohm-Bawerk, Mises, and maybe Wicksteed and Vetter. Got a 15 page limit so we'll see what I can cram in there.

oops, I confused Mises with Rothbard.

I had a copy of Human Action, but I gave it to my sister for Christmas before I had a chance to read it. I also had a copy of For a New Liberty by Rothbard, but donated to my local Libertarian Party before I had a chance to read it.

I'll study the books by these guys and pick one up.

Sounds like you are doing some serious studying, good for you! I haven't read a ton of books on economics because I was basically converted to free market ideas from the basic principles of the Libertarian Party.

A couple of the books on the list that focus on economics that you might not have heard of are:

Makers and Takers ( I have an autographed copy by the author)

and

Collapse of Complex Societies.

Collapse of Complex Societies focuses on the collapse of the Roman Empire, the collapse of the Mayans, and the collapse of the Indians in Chalco Canyon. It also has interested stuff on the collapse of the Third Dynasty of Ur.

Tainter, the author, shows that all these societies, and basically all societies of history, collapse because of economic reasons. He argues that as the complexity of the society increases, it eventually freezes and then contracts the economy, and then at a certain point, the central government will collapse.

It's a really great book, and I'm shocked that hardly any Libertaians seem to have heard of it.

I think Hayeks Road to Serfdom has been the most influential libertarian type book ever written, it heavily influence Reagan. I just ordered it on Amazon last night.

I read in Doherty's Radicals for Capitalism that Road to Serfdom that Milton Freidman (I believe) said it was responsible for recruiting an entire generation of free market economists.

I don't know how much impact it would have with the general public. I loved it.

I'd add Murray Rothbard's For A New Liberty (http://mises.org/rothbard/newlibertywhole.asp) and I've heard(though haven't read) Milton Friedman's Free to Choose was very influential (It converted Arnold Schwarznegger...a lot of good that did )

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian Doherty at the 2004 national Libertarian Party convention (I met Ron Paul there as well). I also picked up Doherty's book a few months ago and read most of it, its really good.

It is basically a life and times of Rand, Hayek, Rothbard, Mises, and Milton Friedman).

I forgot to put it on the list.

I apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused you.

You didn't have the Market for Liberty or For a New Liberty in the poll... interesting.

I haven't read that book. Only books whih I have actually read are included in this poll. The book may very well merit top 20 status, but I just haven't read it yet.

I'm sure there are books on this list which you have not read either.

Galileo's Comments:

So far, Ron Paul leads the pack, with Bastiat, Rand, Browne, Hayek and Ruwart in the 2nd tier.

But 0 votes for We, the classic anti-utopian novel that Rand plagerized with Anthem?

0 votes for Bergland, a book that covers practically everything in concise form, from free markets, to civil liberties, to non-aggression, to everything on the Nolan chart?

0 votes for Carey and Barnett? These books, in concise yet detailed manner, lay out the principles of the Constitution and give specific details on how our Constitution has been lost, because of the rulings of Marshall and others. They show how the nescessary and proper clause championed by Madison and Jefferson has been perverted. They show how James Madison is far superior to Alexander Hamilton.

I urge everyone here to read these books.

The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy is a great book that shows how over the past 500 years, military spending has bankrupted all the great powers of Europe.

The book shows how economic power follows a curve 50 years ahead of military power. Economic power rises 50 years before military power, and economic power dropped 50 years before military power follows suit.

We are in the age where our economic power is dropping, but our military power is still steady, not a good palce to be.

Your poll should only allow one option. What do you think the results would look like?

Everybody would vote for Ron Paul.

One point of the poll was to promote some great, but lesser known books.

I don't know about that. Maybe. I was thinking Atlas Shrugged would beat out Ron Paul, actually.

Reason: I think everyone who has read Atlas Shrugged is also clicking for Ron Paul's book. I don't necessarily think all of the people who have read Ron Paul's book have even read Atlas Shrugged. It might be 6 votes for Atlas, 4 for Ron Paul.

Just a theory though.
