How legit of a site is opensecrets?

It uses FEC data, and makes it easier to search and sort. How legit is anything? Cases in point: New York Times, Federal Debate Commission, Federal Reserve Bank, United Nations?

Meanwhile, they don't strip these failures in suits of their bonuses, they just tax them ninety percent (and I can't help but wonder if all the usual deductions and loopholes associated with the tax code apply). If I remember correctly, one guy got $138 million. If I could get $13.8 million for being incompetent, I'd be so retired and set for life...

The contributions did not come from the company. They were contributions of at least $200 made by people who listed AIG as their employer. Ron Paul has the US Army listed as his top contributor. The US Army did not contribute to Ron Paul's campaign.
From the bottom of their page:

METHODOLOGY: The numbers on this page are based on contributions from PACs and individuals giving $200 or more. All donations were made during the 2008 election cycle and were released by the Federal Election Commission. Figures for the current election cycle are based on data released on March 02, 2009.
