Wow, look at all those "ivy league" schools giving money to presidential candidates. They do this all the time no matter who it is. I guess that's the only reason they are "prestige" schools.

Why can schools make campaign donations when they are 501(c)3's?

Most top donors give money to all candidates to cover their bases.
As for schools donating:

This table lists the top donors to this candidate in the 2007 - 2008 election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates
Ron Paul's top contributors in the last campaign were listed as military branches.

Note some of the same corporations listed.

I do know an employee of Lockheed Martin who is borderline libertarian. I didn't expect the support to be that large though. Ironic.
