Get used to this sort of thing. Obama says "I'm changing this Bush policy" when in reality he changes nothing but the wording.

So I see this headline on a blog post "Obama administration withdraws ‘enemy combatant’ definition."

I'm thinking GREAT, this means that there isn't some stupid classification of people that the so-called president can put you in that allows him to lock you up indefinitely and torture you.

Ah, but then you RTFA.

In its filing today, the government bases its authority to hold detainees at Guantanamo on the Authorization for the Use of Military Force, which Congress passed in September 2001, and which authorized the use of force against nations, organizations, or persons the president determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the September 11 attacks, or harbored such organizations or persons.

So it's the same exact shit!!

Bush et al. needed a way to lock people up without charges or trial, based only on their say so. So they came up with something that wasn't in the Geneva Conventions, viola "unlawful enemy combatant."

So now, Obama says that we just won't call them that anymore. But, if the so-called president determines that you are in league with Al Qeada, then they can still do whatever they want with you.

I'm starting to hate Obama.

Reminds me of how Diebold changed into Premier Election Solutions and Blackwater became Xe.

When something gets a bad rep, just change the name. Or in this case, just get rid of the name altogether.

I bet 90% of people won't even read the article, just the headline, and they'll come away deceived that 0bama actually CHANGED something.

After the Enron scandal, Arthur Anderson & Co tried to slither away by re-naming themselves just plain Anderson. Worked for a month or 2, but eventually that unit shut down as well.

The word "newspeak" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak) comes to mind. ;)
