Bernanke TV interview to be aired Sunday
Thu Mar 12, 2009 5:30pm EDT
WASHINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) - In a rare degree of public exposure, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has taped a television interview that will be aired on Sunday, CBS television said on Thursday.
It is Bernanke's first on-the-record television interview as Fed chairman. Bernanke has aimed to make the Fed more transparent to the public, although the central bank has been under fire in recent weeks for not divulging more details about the emergency bailouts of American International Group (AIG.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and other institutions.
The "60 Minutes" interview of Bernanke by journalist Scott Pelley will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Pelley interviewed the Fed chairman in Dillon, South Carolina on Saturday, CBS said.
In the interview, Bernanke talks about what caused the economic crisis and when he expects an end to the recession, which officially began in December 2007, CBS said. Bernanke also discusses the failure of investment bank Lehman Brothers, the AIG rescue, and how financial rules may change in the future, the show said.
Bernanke was in Dillon, his home town, for a ceremony to name a highway interchange after him.
Bernanke took questions from journalists through a moderator after a speech Feb. 18 at the National Press Club. It is rare for a Fed chairman, whose comments frequently move financial markets, to answer on the record questions from the news media. (Reporting by Mark Felsenthal, Editing by Chizu Nomiyama)
