I generally do not pay much attention to opinion polls because they are tools to create news, rather than report it. One kind of poll I have looked at has to do with why younger people and certain faith groups are overwhelmingly drawn toward more liberal candidates.

The main issue was "social justice." Today's students seem to have a social conscience, and in some places are required to participate in community service projects as part of their school curriculum.

I'm wondering if there is a way for liberty-minded conservatives to have more influence and visibility through community service. It's one thing for a guy to show up to feed the homeless wearing a Ron Paul shirt, but it would be another thing for 20 people to staff a water station at a half-marathon with shirts and signs that have a liberty and service message. What if a group of conservatives offer to start a tutoring program in a priority school (one that is in big trouble, academically). What if a group of conservatives coach a neighborhood sports league? Adult literacy, health care, housing, issues on aging, homelessness-- these are issues we care about. We just agree that big government is not the answer.

Have any of your local CFL groups tried anything like this? I would welcome ideas and input because it seems like this is the one thing we're not really talking about.

If a community organizer can be elected President, there has to be a better way for us to increase our influence through community service.

You make an excellent point and this is a great idea. I'm going to keep this in mind as we plan for C4L events here in VT.
