CPAC Straw Poll — Libertarianism Uber Alles

National Review
March 04, 2009

While the main story is that Mitt Romney is the clear favorite for 2012 among those who hit last week's CPAC event (really?), there are other stories here as well.

First, Ron Paul came in tied for third with Sarah Palin at 13% in the aforementioned horse race. I would not have guessed that CPAC attendees and Ron Paul revolutionaries overlapped that much.

Second, when asked what issue was most important to them, "Reducing the size of the federal government" (27%) came in first, well ahead of the second-most cited issue of concern, "The war on terrorism" (12%). 45% of those polled listed libertarian concerns as most important to them (reducing the size of the federal government and reducing spending and taxes). Only 18% listed social concerns as most important (doing away with abortion, promoting traditional values, and illegal immigration).

Third, 64% of the 1,757 attendees polled were 25 or younger.

While one might argue that CPAC attendees are not reflective of the conservative street as a whole, it is somewhat surprising to me that the libertarian wing of the conservative movement was as strong at it was at last week's confab.

This is an encouraging trend. Still, I have the unfortunate feeling that for many of these "conservatives", it's more about partisanship than principle.

Surprising. One would think younger people would be less likely to spend money to vote in a straw poll . I wonder what the demographics of Romney's bought-and-paid for voting bloc are?
