View Full Version : Ron Paul ties Sarah Palin in CPAC Straw Poll

One of the more interesting phenomenons from the 2008 GOP Primary campaign was the countless local straw polls that Ron Paul either won or finished well in. Many of his supporters pointed to them as evidence of possible victory for the nomination. What it truly represented was the kind of grassroots activist support Ron Paul had. The results of the 2009 CPAC Straw Poll demonstrate the Paul activists are still around and they aren’t going anywhere. As Ron Paul says, “Freedom is popular”.

Ron Paul didn’t win the straw poll. That distinction was left for Mitt Romney who’s ballot stuffing tactics during last year’s Ames Iowa Straw Poll were criticized by many. The final results according to Politico were:

“Romney took 20 percent of the vote, followed by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal with 14 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 13 percent, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with 13 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 10 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 7 percent. “

So Jindal the annointed and Romney the empty shell came in the top two spots. Ron Paul and Sarah Palin tied for third, only 1% behind Jindal. That is pretty impressive for a conference made up mostly of neo-conservative ignorant idiots touting preemptive war like Allahpundit and his false conservative minions over at Hot Air.

However there are two possible reasons why Ron Paul performed so well. First, his Campaign for Liberty had a large presence as well as the youthful exuberant Young Americans for Liberty. Their presence certainly helped at the straw poll ballot box.

Ron Paul’s recent presence in the media talking economic sense also helped and probably won over some former neo-conservatives. When the results of a poll have Ron Paul in a tie with the most recent GOP Vice Presidential candidate it means that some minds are being changed.

It’s going to take time. There’s still a long way to go and we liberty lovers are not going away.

A Ron Paul supporter has the last word in the article quoted above from Politico:

Jenna Robinson, a graduate student in North Carolina, who works at the Raleigh-based John William Pope Center for Higher Education, said she voted for Ron Paul. The libertarian-leaning lawmaker has been proven right about the nation’s precarious financial situation, she said.

“I feel like he’s the candidate most likely to stick to his convictions on individual liberty.”

Amen Jenna. Amen.

Well at least we smashed Huckleberry Hound and Newt.

This is a really good showing for RP at CPAC. I also love how took the time to school that CPAC audience about money issues and foreign policy. I could almost see the hamster on the wheel inside the heads of some of those neocon kids in the audience. I saw a few lightbulbs go on when RP was talking about Taft and the "true conservative" foreign policy.

He didnt tie her, he came in 3rd and Palin 4th. They just both rounded to 13%.

Would've been awesome to come in first. But a close 3rd is not bad at all. We'll get 'em next year. :)

Mitt Romney — 20 percent
Bobby Jindal — 14 percent

There really was not a concerted effort to win the straw poll. It is probably too early for that.

You can bet had Palin had even one single more vote then Ron Paul that they would have called it 3rd and 4th.

I believe CPAC is more authoritative on CPAC's poll than RedState.com: http://cpac.org/strawpoll/2-09_CPAC_Straw_Poll.ppt

Unfortunately they do not reveal raw vote totals, but you can be sure that if Sarah Palin had one vote more than Ron Paul, they would have put her in 3rd.

This is nothing to be proud of. Palin didn't even show up at CPAC and she tied Paul.

If Paul's serious about running for president this is a straw poll we need to win in 2010 and 2011

Looks like Romney made a concerted effort. He most likely bussed people in again.

If Romney's already competing, it's time for Paul and the rest of us to start competing.

Please, no warmongerers or socialists. And, did you mean to have Paul as VP?

We'd need to win the primary before choosing a running mate anyway.

Oh don't I know it.

RedState is just distorting the facts to suit their purposes, as usual. HATE them and all those like them.

So CPAC picks Mitt Romney, loser from last year, who supported the banker bailout, the big 3 bailout and foisted socialized medicine on Mass (which has been a spectacular failure) and changes his positions so often he makes me dizzy. He's just another Bush Republican. The Stupid Party on the right is obviously ineducable.

I'm with Vox Day (http://voxday.blogspot.com/2009/03/republicans-never-learn.html):

These results tend to indicate that a little more than one-quarter of the "conservatives" at CPAC have a functional brain. Romney is a liberal technocrat. Jindal is a little goblin who just blew his first moment on the national stage, he's the sort of politician that only political geeks would take seriously as a presidential candidate. Palin has genuine political star power, but she's of dubious conservative credentials. However, she is much more viable than the other two and would look particularly good if paired as a running mate for Ron Paul, who is the most principled politician in the country, has a broad-spectrum national following, and has been remarkably, demonstrably, prescient about domestic and foreign affairs.

LOL @ "little goblin." He goes onto suggest a Palin-Paul ticket. Like that's gonna happen with Bill Kristol whispering in her ear.

I'm pretty much done with the GOP and this country, which is hardly recognizable since the Republicrat statists have driven it into the ground with their vile Socialism, and obviously have no intention on turning back.

We're thinking about leaving it all behind and moving to Dominica (http://www.safehavenoffshore.com/faqs.cfm) before the SHTF.

I was at CPAC (it was f'ing awesome) and I was present for the Straw Poll anouncements. I do not remember Palin tying, it could have happened and I was just yelling "Ron Paul" to loud to notice...lol

And BrandonYates, this was Campaign for Liberty's first year involved and we had the most volunteers out of everyone. I think we had like 120... Other people had like 10 and 15. We spammed the place, so to say the the poll was proof that we were not trying is an ignorant statement. I do agree that we need to get even better next year, but for C4L's first year of attendance at CPAC, we did a heck of a job.

that is excellent! thank you for the good work and for telling us about it. on the "tie", someone else said that Ron won 3rd outright when the decimal points are counted (13.xxx%) but when rounding down to an integer that is what is said to be a "tie."

Nobody mentioned anything about voting in the straw poll this year.

The main goal was to introduce Ron Paul to many new people by hosting many different events and by promoting those events.

New voters who wanted to learn about Ron Paul got the education of a lifetime at CPAC.

There were Ron Paul videos, speeches and Ron Paul book signings.

I am sure next year will be even better.

Please, no warmongerers or socialists. And, did you mean to have Paul as VP?

We'd need to win the primary before choosing a running mate anyway.

I am proposing a new technique where the primary candidate announces their running mate during the primaries to enhance the appeal of their candidacy. And, yes, I am suggesting that RP be the pledged VP candidate. He will be seen as an easier sell to the base in that capacity, and also to mitigate the issue of his age. He will add a huge amount of conservative integrity to the ticket.

Palin is an unknown quantity and popular with the base. She could still go rogue on the RNC and adopt a highly Constitutionalist platform. It seems a possibility. Let's see what her talking points are over the next couple of years.

Kucinich will help across the aisle and bring with him many of the RP issues: anti-Fed, pro sound money, pro civil liberties, anti-foreign entanglements. They would attempt to deny either major party a majority of electoral votes.
