What sort of people are voting for this lunatic and why would Rand suggest that he would support him?

Perhaps because Rand knows this guy is being cut loose by the GOP who clearly don't want him to run again. Perhaps he thinks he can have an influence on him. I seriously doubt it. The guy is a warmonger lunatic. Not even smart enough to be a neocon.

Rand should just challenge him in the Primary. Is that possible?

I know very little about him but would suggest doing some additional research. Someone has been actively making changes to his wiki over the last 2 months vs historical trends. I would suggest reading through the page history.

Strong words.

I haven't looked into Bunning. How is he a lunatic?

- Voted for Iraq
- Supports Iraq and Afghan wars AND troop surges
- Voted for PATRIOT Act
- Voted for Military Commissions Act
- "I support the goals of No Child Left Behind"
- "The Medicare program provides important medical and hospital benefits..."
- "I have been actively involved in protecting and strengthening our Social Security system"
- "... legislation, known as the Farm Bill, is a multi-year bill involving issues such as federal farm support, food assistance, agriculture trade, conservation, and rural development. I was pleased to see that after several months of stalled negotiations and a Presidential veto that the Senate was able to pass the Farm Bill on June 18, 2008. I was proud to support this piece of legislation"
- Voted to increase minimum wage
- Supports the Pro New World Order, Pro North American Union Free Trade Agreements of the Americas. NAFTA, CAFTA.

- "On December 18, 2008, the Lexington Herald Leader reported that Sen. Bunning's non-profit foundation, the Jim Bunning Foundation, has given less than 25 percent of its proceeds to charity. The charity has taken in $504,000 since 1996, according to Senate and tax records; during that period, Senator Bunning was paid $180,000 in salary by the foundation while working a reported one hour per week."

- Apparently uses teleprompters during debates

- In October, 2004 Bunning told reporters "Let me explain something: I don't watch the national news, and I don't read the paper. I haven't done that for the last six weeks. I watch Fox News to get my information."

I could go on .....

He also looks like a lunatic:

He has voted against every bailout since 2007, and has even struck out at the Fed, somewhat. These are the things Rand is referring to, as well as others. Mr. Bunning hasn't been perfect, but he has stood strong of late. He opposed TARP, while McConnell cheer leaded it. I believe that's why the squeeze is one, Bunning opposed the GOP!

Curlz, wiki isn't a source. The public is free to access and alter anything they like.

Well I found one good thing :p

Bunning was also the only member of the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs to have opposed Ben Bernanke for Chief of the Federal Reserve. He said it was because he had doubts that Bernanke would be any different from Alan Greenspan

But seriously... it's because you don't want to come across as attacking the party unless the guy isn't popular at all.

I got 90% of the stuff from his own senate website.

He supports socialistic government programs and is a war-monger.

.... and you think Rand ought to support him?

.... and you think Rand ought to support him?

Compare that to Mitch McConnell's pick to replace Bunning, and then forcing Bunning to retire so Mitch can get a buddy in, the answer could be YES!

What this looks like to me is: Dr. Paul sees Bunning being pressured out of the GOP for opposing them on TARP, and a few other things. Looks like Rand is saying if you root him out, you'll have to deal with me.

Instead of attacking Bunning, we should be focusing on the real problem in Kentucky: Mitch McConnell!

Why did you give us wikipedia as the link?

Why did you give us wikipedia as the link?

I looked there initially ...... then checked his own website.

My quotes come directly from here http://bunning.senate.gov/

He supports No Child Left Behind (i.e. doubling the size of the Department of Education)

He supports war-mongering obviously

He supports government funded healthcare and social security

Like many politicians, Bunning started off much better than he got over time. He was certainly an improvement when first elected.

I would strongly urge Rand's supporters to follow Dr. Paul's example and refrain from personal attacks. Bunning is well known and generally well liked in the state. Rand will need his supporters to win the seat. There is, however, a sense among many that he has stayed too long and not up to the job like he once was.

Let's not unnecessarily create enemies when we need friends. ;)

good points, Bradley in D.C!!! if this all is going to h#LL in a handbasket in D.C, and young
Rand Paul is a fresh face, quietly polite in his speaking manner, and generally on the same
wavelength as his father, the last thing we need to do is to alienate the older voters of the dude
who once had the full confidence of the hard core g.o.p people in the state of kentucky, a state
that tends to like the idea of a smaller gov't at the federal level. if Rand Paul can be positioned
as NOT BEING politics as usual, i sense a coalition builder potentiality. the elders of both parties
know there is a "throw the bums out" discontent building, so to see feckless democrat spending
after debilitating feckless republican budgets is something that would not thrill the older voters...
keep in mind before our burst bubble... g.w bush DOUBLED over our national debt in his eight
years, and barack obama's stimulus approach has the debt doubling over once more in FIVE years!
