You guys may have heard of Wikiscanner? It's a tool created by Virgil Griffith that allows you to see who was behind edits to whatever Wikipedia entries, where the edits would previously be anonymous. To date, the scanner has uncovered some pretty malicious edits made by companies against their competitors, political groups against opposition, etc. So of course, I got to wondering - who has been editing Ron Paul?

Virgil released the tool several weeks ago, but unfortunately he didn't yet have the feature up that allows you to search on particular entries (such as Ron Paul), only on the names of actual editors. BUT I found a workaround on the wikiscanner site that does allow you to search by an entry title, even though the feature hasn't been officially enabled yet (don't tell anyone). :)

Anyways, here's the link to see all of the anonymous edits to our subject of interest, Ron Paul.

http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/f.php?pagetitle=ron+paul

You'll notice that most edits come from ISPs like Cox or Verizon or ATT, in which case, basically, just some normal home user most likely made the edit, or sometimes the edits come from Universities in which case it could be anyone on campus basically. But dig in and see if you can find anything interesting :)

Finally, here's the Wikiscanner homepage and the FAQ for anyone who is interested:

Not much really stands out, but here is one curious entry made by "Time Warner Telecom Inc (San Francisco, California)" - notice that the change is colored in Red text:

So, there you have it. You'll notice that most edits come from ISPs like Cox or Verizon or ATT, in which case, basically, just some normal home user most likely made the edit, or sometimes the edits come from Universities in which case it could be anyone on campus basically.

Time Warner Telecom is a residential cable modem provider. Most likely just some dude with a cable modem doing it, nothing weird about that.

Time Warner Telecom provides home ISP service over cable.

There are some much more interesting ones, though.

Check out the ones from "Samaritan Ministries" in Plano, TX, adding the newsletter/racial stuff.

Or how about someone from Fort Belvoir making some kind of change (I can't tell what) to a portion dealing with CAFTA.

Even better, someone from the Internal Revenue Service deleted information about him taking the least amount of money from PACs of any Republican candidate.

WOW! Good finds. I love how incriminating this stuff is :)

This is why you only trust Wikipedia for trivial stuff, and not matters of substance.

im gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you on this one. I like the fact that I can see not only the "facts" but the process as well.

Encyclopedias give you just the result- and you don't know what was edited. Wikipedia gives you the full story.

I wouldn't take it that far. I am a mathematician, and I can verify the information on math is close to 100% accurate on wikipedia.

But it wouldn't surprise me if some people edited ron's article with malicous (sp?) intent

Does anyone have experience editing on Wikipedia? I need something edited on another page - something inaccurate/libelous about Ron Paul. PM me if you can help. If not, I'll figure it out but figured someone else could do it much faster. thanks!
