I'm fairly sure that there's no reason not to welcome this report, it makes some important specific points, I first saw the story on Al Jazeera, and I have to say I find the reactions from the Hamas spokesman and Ehud Olmert's spokesman to be quite irritating, they both try and avoid responsbility for their actions..anyway - http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2009/02/2009223417264834.html


Findings rejected

For its part, Israel has rejected the findings of the AI report and criticised its methodology.

It said the report "presents a biased version of the events, and does not adhere to professional criteria and objectivity".

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland, reporting from Jerusalem, said AI is being criticised for not taking into account the full extent of Palestinian rockets and mortars - around 10,000 - fired towards Israel over the last eight years.

"Israel is also very critical of Amnesty for not mentioning what Israel says was Hamas' use of civilians in Gaza as human shields," she said.

Hamas has also rejected AI's criticism of its actions.

It said the report is unfair, and that there is no comparison between the Israeli war machine and Palestinians who "defend themselves with some rifles and other primitive means".

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told the BBC that Israel had used white phosphorus but not as an anti-personnel weapon.

Mr Regev also accused Amnesty of basing its report on unsound data supplied by Hamas.

Mr Regev defended Israeli military tactics in an interview for the BBC's Today programme.

"We tried to be as surgical as humanly possible in a difficult combat situation," he said.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the report "unfair", telling Reuters there was no comparison between the Israeli forces' weaponry and Palestinian "people who defend themselves with some rifles and other primitive means".

He denied that Hamas had acquired weapons from other countries.
