Incredible! Just incredible!

This is what led to Chrysler's problems in the late seventies--producing cars with no eye whatever toward what the market required of them. Then, just to prove that arrogance and cocaine are a very, very bad mix, Johnny Z. Delorean did the exact same thing just a few years later.

Now, what part of this lesson is so hard that the much-vaunted Japanese decide they can afford to ignore it?

Remind me not to invest in Japanese companies right away. They seem to have caught our arrogant disease...

From the article:

UAW Backs Idea of 'Car Czar'

The head of the United Auto Workers union said Monday that he would like the government to appoint a "car czar" who "knows something about the auto industry" to oversee the restructuring of the Big Three.

On the sidelines of the Detroit auto show, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said he doesn't favor putting a Wall Street expert in the post.

In related news, union representative Iam A. Fox was quoted as saying he backed the idea of putting a chicken expert in charge of security at the henhouse.

They would be if everyone wasn't waiting for the bailouts. If the automakers knew for a fact that no more bailout money was ever gonna come, they would get all their firings done and slash the prices on their existing inventory. It would be a great opportunity for people to buy cars, so everyone would take advantage of it. The auto companies would have taken the first step on the road back to profitability.

But of course the politicians can't let that happen.

I am waiting for prices to fall. Storage is going to cost a lot of money. The LA port has been filled up for months.
