Finally, a state with some common sense. Jindal wants to read and find out what strings are attached and whether taking that money from the federal government makes sense. w00t! I might just cry... and move to LA!

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate, has suggested his state may not be interested in all of the roughly $4 billion allotted to it in the economic stimulus package to be signed by President Obama today.

"We'll have to review each program, each new dollar to make sure that we understand what are the conditions, what are the strings and see whether it's beneficial for Louisiana to use those dollars," Jindal said, according to CBS affiliate WWLTV.

Jindal is scheduled to give the response to the president’s not-exactly-a-state-of-the-union address next Tuesday.

Louisiana reportedly faces a possible $2 billion budget shortfall next year. It has been allocated $538,575,876 for infrastructure spending in the stimulus package, and the White House predicts the bill will create 50,000 jobs in the state.

As WWLTV notes, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has said he’ll take any money that Louisiana turns down.

The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, isn’t letting up in its criticism of Democrats over the stimulus package. Following the White House’s releases trumpeting the bill, the RNC sent an email to reporters offering research on “Democrats’ broken pledges on transparency, bipartisanship, pork, and job creation.”

The email quotes news stories on order to criticize Democrats for breaking a promise to post the bill online 48 hours in advance of a vote, for not working in a bipartisan manner, for putting out a package “loaded with wasteful earmarks,” and for overestimating the bill’s job creation potential.

House Republican Leader John Boehner also put out a statemnet hammering the deal.

“The flawed bill the President will sign today is a missed opportunity, one for which our children and grandchildren will pay a hefty price," he said. "It’s a raw deal for American families, providing just $1.10 per day in relief for workers while saddling every family with $9,400 in added debt to pay for special-interest programs and pork-barrel projects. It will do little to create jobs, and will do more harm than good to middle-class families and our economy."

It's just a publicity stunt by Jindal.

Jindal wants to be President. He's vying for the popularity that Sanford is getting.

and move to LA!

Just not to N.O. right? Didn't the people of Naw-lins just re-elect what's-his-name, even after being disarmed by him?

I don't think Jindal has the authority to do any of this. It's the legislature's call.

I was wondering, if Louisiana were actually able to refuse "stimulus" money, could they in any way be protected from the inevitable inflationary effects? I'm thinking 'no.'

Louisiana's economy is still doing pretty well so We don't need the toxic money. As a matter of fact 11% of Lafayette's economy is oil related which just slowed down at the beginning of the year due to the majority of the offshore vessels putting off coast guard inspection due to the hurricane katrina clean up. I haven't worked in over three weeks but everything should be picking up around march or april. I will not be shy and I will come out and say this is the main reason that Louisiana is always on the top ten states to find work. What other job or profession out there will pay a man massive amounts of overtime and act like its perfectly normal where most jobs frown down upon it. Hell I worked 274 days last year in the gulf and made about 111k last year and I am looking at beating that this year. So I don't think We need the feds help and to be honest I just wish they would just go away.

Don't be too optimistic. Our economy is faltering, have you noticed the number of plant closures and employment reductions? And yes, we are now seeing massive layoffs. Many here love to delude themselves into thinking that La will be the only exception in the US even when they see a crumbling economy in every state around them. It's happening to us now, but we should be greateful for the delay because of hurricane rebuilding. Sadly most of those houses still have blue tarps awaiting insurance payments that will never come. Land sales are up but houses are not selling.

I'm not in favor of any stimulus by any means, I'm just saying get ready for a deep depression here too.

As others have said, it's just a political move by BJ (Jindal has even better initials than BO!).

He has no principles and is just another power hungry politician who will do anything and say anything to get power.

My opinion,as a lic merchant mariner and a resident of coastal La,the oil and gas industry before storms was really slow and wages had been drastically cut even though if you were exp you could find work as needed, soon after the storms wages doubled and better with all the ins and fema money floating around,I saw that coming to an end and moved from oilfield to oceangoing tug that is able to do a wide variety of jobs.I have kept in touch with friends, employers and it has drastically slowed down at present there and even though this is traditionally a slow time of year due to weather, this i and others feel is going to be a lot diff, drop in demand, more regs for the industry and mariners along with no new drilling will most likely lead to leaner times,I have seen it come and go quite a few times in my career.I have always loved La as i have looked at it as the last frontier for Freedoms along the gulfcoast.Hopefully La can regain some that it,s lost in the last few yrs.

Agreed...and Jindal is by no means conservative. He wants to co-sponsor medicaid payments for Christ's sake.

Is it really as dangerous as they say?
