From Meetup Email:
Dear Friends and Patriots,
We Have A Candidate! (If we make it happen. It is now up to us!) Last week Debra Medina filed for office and appointed a campaign treasurer. This is not a formal announcement, it is just the initial ground work to allow things to get started. Debra has certainly caught our vision of what it could mean to have a Governor of Texas who is committed to the people of Texas and committed to our Constitution. She is willing to take on this challenge, but she needs to know that indeed, this is the desire of the people.
Many of you will already know Debra Medina. Debra has been a hard worker within the Republican party and serves as the Wharton County Chairman for the Republican Party. However, Debra has never put party before principle. For those of you who may not know Debra, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ZC26KGb5I and listen to her speech at the Republican State Convention last year in Houston . While the Republican Party has tried to marginalize Ron Paul for years, Debra has been a strong supporter of Dr. Paul. She is currently the State Coordinator for the Campaign for Liberty. Debra has helped form a group called Operation Come and Take It, to build not only support for the idea of liberty, but to educate supporters on the Fundamentals of Liberty needed in order to effectively share this message with others. Debra has established her own educational organization called, Ambassadors Institute, which also offers instruction in the Constitution and the Fundamentals of Liberty. Debra brings not only her political skills with her, but also business and management skills. Debra is a nurse by training and has run her own business for 7 years. She and her husband Noe Medina have a grown daughter Janise and a son Jacob, who is a sophomore at Blinn/Texas A&M. Debra is a native of Texas and a 20 resident of Wharton, TX. Debra is very proud of her heritage as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is also eligible for membership in the Daughters of the Texas Revolution. Now, she is willing to be part of the current Revolution, to return government to the people of Texas!
When we asked her if she would consider running as the "people's candidate" for Governor, she was shocked and a bit overcome. She stammered, "I have never thought about anything like this." We assured her that was part of her appeal. We are all tired of people who have spent their life time positioning themselves and cutting deals, so one day they would be "anointed" to office. We are asking her to serve the people. Understandably she said she would need to give it some serious thought and discuss it with her family. She immediately acknowledged that her plate is very full. Her daughter getting married in April, as well as her commitments for the Campaign for Liberty and to the Republican Party. However she did not give us a definite "no." Indeed, she said she had spent her life trying to walk through the doors that were opened "where she could be of service to other."
While Debra has been considering what taking on such a challenge would mean to her and to her family, now she also needs to know that this is not just the request of a few individuals. She needs to know there is broad based support for a "peoples candidate" and for her personally as that candidate. So friends, THIS IS IT. THIS IS WHERE WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. If you believe Debra is the kind of candidate you would like to see as the next governor of Texas, please let her know. E-mail her at debra@debramedina.us . Send this message to all your friends. Post it on all the blogs and forums and ask others to contact her also. Financial contributions will also be an important measure of support. Checks can be sent to the Debra Medina Campaign, c/o Mark Vasek, 904 W. Montgomery STE, 4-506, Willis, TX 77378.
There is no doubt Debra can bring support from other Republicans who, like herself, have been disappointed that their party has not lived up to its own platform. Now it is up to us to bring support from the volunteers of the Ron Paul Revolution, who saw Debra stand almost alone in defending our right to have a voice within the Republican Party. This is going to be a huge challenge and we will need each of you to continue doing whatever it is that your heart leads you to do to support a "peoples candidate," one who truly cares about Liberty, Freedom and our Constitution and one who can be on the ballot for Governor in 2010.

She certainly has passion. She gave some good speeches during the votes during our district caucus. She was hurt terribly by the way the Ron Paul folks were treated in there and she let them know it.

She is going to have to compete with Rick Perry (Texas Governor)and Kay Bailey Hutchison (US Senate) and maybe Kinky Friedman (weirdo). It going to be a long drawn out battle and they have already started campaigning.

I'm sure money would best go straight to the campaign for now. If we start a grassroots project then it's a different matter. We can do a banner once there is a web site.
gobs.
*100. Seriously. Us C4L types alone can't come close to it ($30K per day needed IIRC from a very good source). We have to inspire others and get big donors.

Yes, we need to get a money bomb or (series of money bombs) planned ASAP. :)
Maybe Ron would consider doing an online "commercial" for some Medina Money Bombs - that could help pull at least some funds to Deb's campaign from around the country rather than limiting it to just Texans (not that we won't try, and not that there are not a lot of us, but Perry and Hutchinson have the party behind them totally, Deb will be outspent for sure.)
Brainstorming for bombs...lol...

Is Kay running Independent? I think we're looking at a really hard to overcome GOP primary?
If she runs as a GOP leaning Independent then she'll be on the final ballot against whoever wins the GOP primary.
She'll be the people's candidate; it will be our job to get the people to understand that she's for job growth and against special interest. (Texas politicians really like lobbyist, they really help in informing them of different sides of the same coin.)

We need billboards, and an introductory ad.
Both candidates ran ads reintroducing themselves to viewers at the beginning of the year, and Perry ran an ad promoting the success of a spring special legislative session on school funding and property taxes.

given the dynamics of the texas gooobernatorial race, the best strategy for winning will be defeating the opposition. maybe she is above character assassination, but i most certainly am not.

Against Perry, maybe we can use that he wanted to force Texas teen girls to take those guardisil shots - now there are dead teens and very ill teens and the vaccine is suspected, I was reading about that just the other day.
Against Hutchinson...I was looking at her voting record, she voted with dems enough so there will be some goodies in there, I'm sure - haven't looked closely at the stuff yet, tho.

Hutchinson voted for the bailout. Sort of easy to frame them with the liberal camp.

"In other news, racial overtones tint the campaign as bodies hanging from nooses are placed all over texas... an early, ugly turn by the racist, gunowning, government hating bigots."
Maybe find a different way to display it. I really like the idea though. Maybe fake campaign signs- when the dems were ousting chaffe in RI, he did everything to seperate himself from the republicans. His ads had democrats- only lefty republicans did robocalls- etc.
Well the dems put out signs that copied chaffe's font and style- but instead of Keep Chaffe it said "Support Bush".
They were pretty effective down here.
Maybe something like "Kay Bailout Hutchinson"

I talk to Deb often, especially in the leadup to our state convention next weekend in Austin, and would like to clarify that while she's certainly hearing from people who want her to do this, she hasn't made up her mind yet. That's why the mail that was in the OP is calling for people to contact her and let her know what they think, with words and/or funds. It's true she's filed a treasuer's report with the TEC to let her gauge support and talk about things, but there's no office listed so it's not accurate to say she's filed for the governor's race at this time.
I don't want to dampen any enthusiasm--quite the contrary. I just want to make sure people have their expectations in the right place and understand there's a lot for her to think about before deciding if this is going to happen. You can help by letting her know if you want to see it and are willing to work to make it a reality.
Also, Deb is a Republican Party of Texas County Chair and former candidate for Vice-Chair of the RPT. If she gets in this race, it's safe to say it will be as a Republican.

Hutchinson, however, voted against this stimulus package ...........
It's reasonable to say she only voted against it because of the current politics. She voted for the bailout, with a very condescending speech about how all these people calling to tell them to vote it down just didn't understand the changes they'd made from the first House version.

I think she has an uphill battle. When she tried to win the GOP of Texas chairman position during the State convention she was soundly defeated by Tina Benkiser, who sladered her maliciously about the lawsuit we had here during the convention. She will now need to win over this same base to win the primary election. From my expirience this is the heart of the religious right who put the bible before the constitution. I think with the cities going more liberal she should run as an conservative independent but that would put her in with the likes of Kinky Friedman so she will need all the support we can muster fighting this.

THere is a problem here.
The liberty vote will be effectively destroyed by dividing our votes between Larry Kilgore, Debra Medina, AND Kinky Friedman. Capitalized the last and because that is 3 ways...

Which is basically how Kinky and the other independent lost last time round. Even though Perry got less than 50% - he still won.

requires a simple majority... this just means we have to play our cards right, not that mo' candidates = mo' problems.

One of the books I've got on my "go to sleep" shelf is

I talked to Larry last week about it, and he said that since filing doesn't start until november/december, he'll stay in until then and unite behind one candidate for the primary.
Kinky will run as an independant. The big thing is WINNING THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY.

not necessarily.. think free market at least in the preliminary..
having a small batch of likeminded candidates in the beginning is good.
cause we need to see who has the best chance.

Ok that's good to know. I feel a little better about that.

Kinky already said that he is running as a Democrat if he runs again, and that he is going to take it more seriously. He wants to pull an Al Franken.
If we have the voters it could work to our advantage. The key is enough people voting kinky to win him the primary nomination and still having more vote for our candidate. Still, I don't think we would be able to pull in the votes to win both nominations(the ideal scenario).
There are two main fears I have for the election and running this candidate.
1) Name recognition. The google news feed has 0 stories on Debra Medina. On google, the only websites showing it at all are sites like this.
2) Money. Perry has $3 million NOW in his campaign warchest, and this is considered small. Hutchison recently moved $10 million into a gubernatorial bid from her federal election chest, and can move in more. If we want a legitimate bid for governor, there will have to be at least $1 million to spend. I worry mostly about this with the liberty movement backing other candidates as well, splitting our effectiveness.

In the 2006 Republican Primary there were 655,919 participants and Perry received 552,545 votes (84.23%). With Hutchison in the race I know she'll take a good chunk out of his vote. Kilgore was in that [2006] race too and he received 50,119 votes. Kilgore also received 225,897 votes in the 2008 Senatoral race.
If Kilgore pulled out I'm sure Debra could count on his votes, but we need to campaign just as hard to get those votes and any disillusioned Perry supporters. Put the primary date on your calendar and circle it. That is the toughest battle we have to win. The gubernatorial election is just a formality, we'll have a Republican governor whether we like it or not.
