When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost... All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum.' The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron. -- H L Mencken, Baltimore Sun (26 July 1920)

Obama is just thinking, hey, the government can spend money and create jobs. After the spending starts he'd say, "see I created jobs." If people can work in those contract jobs, they'll be OK for the duration of the contract, but this doesn't do anything for the larger economy.

If, during the course of time of those contract jobs the economy turns around, the president will take full credit. In reality, what could be happening is, the people with or without the conract (most people) pay down their debt and start spending again.

We must remember that taxes are a burden on society. If more money is returned to the people, they can decide how to spend their own money. At this time, many are trying to pay off debts, so they're not spending as much, so the economy suffers. Government make work doesn't solve the fundamental problem of individual debt.

Obama is making the same mistake as Bush Jr.

He does not understand so he is relying on his advisers for answers. Like Bush Jr, Obama's advisers do not have the correct answer either!

Mencken was like Nostradamus or something. He predicted GWB in 1920.

The answer to fix the economy should be very easy to figure out. All Obama and his advisors have to do is ask people about their bills and spending habits, that's it! With even a small sample they can see where people stand, and what needs to be done to get the economy back on track, end of story.

Obama has a series of town hall meetings, but he failed to use it properly. He's trying to push a stimulus bill, when he should actually be there to LEARN what's going on financially in American households!!!
