I oppose the economic stimulus package because this will encourage waste and delay recovery in the real economy. One of the aims of the stimulus package is to spend the money as quickly as possible. The problem is that rapid spending without oversight from those who risk their own capital will lead to shoddy construction. For instance, in Cuba the governments efforts to rapidly revive the tobacco industry led to poorly constructed curing barns. Many of the recently-built government barns were destroyed by hurricanes Ike and Gustav, while the older properly-constructed barns survived. I propose we commission a study on the effects of large scale government spending in other centrally planned economies such as Cuba before emulating them so as to avoid repeating their mistakes.
