Yeah so I did not watch the inauguration, but earlier I walked past a TV set which had Entertainment Tonight's coverage of it. Couldn't help but watch for a few minutes.

What captured my attention the most is the picture of the million something crowd that had gathered, then the exclamations from celebrities of this being "the bestest day eva!"

The 4-5 minutes of viewing, made me think of cults and religious worship. Yeah I know I was watching a show about celebrities, but really it was a more honest account/presentation than what you'd find on CNN. What we have here ladies and gentleman, is just celebrity worship, masquerading as hope for positive political changes. Their not in support of his policies, but his rhetoric. They do not love the man, they love the image of the man. At least for the moment, the image of Obama represents all that is good. Hope, patriotism, self sacrifice, charity, etc. Just look at a video like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY18KXQE1Rw) and for a moment view it as a power game. These celebrities are pledging to do good in the name of Obama, the center and holder of power. To be regarded in high light, they associate themselves with Obama. One celebrity pledges not to use plastic bags at the grocery store, Puff Daddy pledges to turn the lights off as he leaves a room.

But back to the mass gathering at the Capital. Millions gather to get a shitty view through binoculars of one man being given butt loads of power. Maybe for the people near the back of the crowd its just another social event, but for the majority its something to really get excited about. Question: is there any other reason a million plus Americans would gather in such a way, other than to celebrate the empowerment of one worshiped politician?

I think a lot of us are missing WHY this is historic. He's (partially) black. It's more symbolic for blacks than anything else. The dullard's promises are vague and ridiculous(ly frightening!). Even so, it was an assertion that America is indeed the land of opportunity, no matter skin color. Obama isn't being worshiped so much as blacks are being praised for ascending as a collective. Unfortunately, I believe this is going to be one of the most disappointing presidencies in history.

What will people focus on when he fails? He's young, black, and liberal (CHANGE). Obama may be what the GOP needs to take back power, so long as they don't fear the negative image of 99 old and white conservatives ganging up on 1 young and black liberal. It may be even MORE divisive in the 2012 presidential election and even LESS focused on specific political agendas. I suppose we'll see how it plays out in top GOP leadership after Obama's honeymoon period ends (within a couple weeks, given the D.C. orgy).

Oh and by the way I urge you to keep this in mind when discussing politics with certain people, in order to avoid miscommunication and be more effective at inciting skepticism towards the new regime.

Do you agree with Rockwell when he said that Republicans become conservative when "liberals" are in charge(and move left when it's their turn)?

I know you were not asking me, but I agree 100% with this. The talk radio hosts are most blatent. It's all about liberty + freedom when they're opposing the statism of democrats, but if it's an R doing it, the principles go out the window.

I was addressing everyone in the thread, but especially you. Thanx for responding. ~hugs~ :) I agree with you totally, btw.

Well, the GOP leadership does; that's for sure.
